qwamqwamqwam, in Sooo where's the Barbie discussion at? What did y'all think?

I hated the entire film. Usually I can understand why people like something even when I don’t but this time it just feels incomprehensible to me. I mean like what you like, it just feels like I watched a different movie than everyone else did.

n00bert,

I didn’t mind it but not gushing over it like some are.

Think it was a bit disjointed in parts and didn’t need the mother daughter arc. Definitely not a movie for kids although the bright colours and familiarity of characters would be attention grabbing. Thematically quite adult with some cool little philosophical-y bits thrown in.

On the plus side it was fun, self aware but not taking itself so seriously while getting a positive message across.

Not horrible, not great was my take. 7/10.

No one wants to fight you on something so silly.

It’s a good film by any measure - cinema is either art or entertainment. Sometimes it’s both, but it doesn’t have to be. If it doesn’t match whatever standards you’ve devised for yourself then…cool.

What is art to one person is not to another. What entertains one person bores another. It’s subjective.

If you want to fight people on this point, you’re either very young or insufferable to be around.

The second one

Don’t you know not to engage? 😎 Round two, fight!

Anyway, I would be content to ignore it, but it has long been user reviewed as the best film of all time, and I think that opens it up for discussion and critical thought, and removes the “argument” or debate from the realm of silly.

Better than The Godfather? Better than Rocky? Better than Casablanca? Better than hundreds of entertaining and well-made movies? Star Wars, or Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?

And considering prison movies. Cool Hand Luke? Felon? Papillon? Escape from Alcatraz? Just some off the top of my head.

I do get annoyed seeing this outclassed flick taking a place with really good movies. I’ve tried to give it a chance, I’ve watched it twice and I still don’t get what people are seeing. It must be mostly men; I can’t imagine a LARGE NUMBER of women find this movie compelling.

I love movies and entertainment. But this one feels like a TV movie from the 80s.

boogetyboo,
@boogetyboo@aussie.zone avatar

I’ve never seen it called the best film of all time?

And I’m a woman… And most women I know really like this film.

I’ve decided you’re 14.

Melatonin, (edited )

So many ways to be wrong.

BTW, what do you think Lemmy’s demographic is? Mostly women you’d say? Even, say, near 50%-50% male/female (self identified)? I mean, YOU’RE here. So obviously it isn’t a desert. Not that I said Shawshank was. But I guess you think that if you are included it can’t be a mostly male experience.

Decide what you like, here is an actual source of fact if you care, which I’m sure you don’t.

Just finished it, really enjoyed the whole 3 seasons. I liked spending more time with the non super powered people in the star wars universe.

Me too!

Florn, in The Green Knight

I think the real lesson the film tries to teach is that the ends don’t necessarily justify the means. Gawain sees the successful but empty life that he would live by making every decision cynically, and decides that an honest, honorable life would be more fulfilling even if he doesn’t fulfill his every ambition.

The film emphasizes the leap or faith he’s taking by ending uncertainly, but in the original poem the Green Knight spares Gawain and rewards his honorable choice.

RedQuestionAsker2, (edited )
@RedQuestionAsker2@hexbear.net avatar

It’s a critique of masculinity, and it uses the knightly code as a way to explore the way that men enforce that code.

Gawain enters the fight against the green knight in order to build his name and get out from under the shadow of his father. Logically, he should strike the green knight non-fatally so that will be returned to him, but he knows that if he does that, the other knights will call him a coward. So he is pressured into entering this arrangement that he knows will kill him.

He’s then led around by a few female characters as represented by his mother’s green belt. He could accept the help of the women which will ensure he lives, but this would feminize him-- implying he cannot fulfill the role of his father.

The ending is critical because it calls into question what exactly honor is in this context. Yeah, he chooses not to live a life without “honor,” but he is not rewarded for it. He gets beheaded anyway because he was damned the moment he wanted to play the game.

In this case, I find it very important that the king outright told Gawain that it was all a game. He was pressured into playing it and following the rules. The movie is telling us that strict adherence to masculinity and patriarchy is self destructive.

JoYo,
@JoYo@lemmy.ml avatar

Donno if King Lot makes an appearance but Sean Harris plays King Arthur, not Gawain’s father.

RedQuestionAsker2,

My mistake

Florn,

Not too bad of one, Gawain is Arthur’s legal heir

JoYo,
@JoYo@lemmy.ml avatar

he was damned the moment he wanted to play the game.

That’s why I’m hesitant to make the analogy to masculinity.

I get how you can make it but “not playing the game” isn’t something that you or I may do.

I also loath analogies in fiction, Tolkien was right.

I agree. I don’t think any of us have an honest choice in the matter because there’s a large level of coercion behind social expectations. I should have used a different word than “choose,” but I actually think your insight makes my reading stronger.

Even if he did “choose” not to play, the movie doesn’t present a positive outcome for doing this.

Also, I love Tolkien, but his writing is full of analogies lol.

OneCardboardBox, in I watched The Zone of Interest (2023), dir. by Jonathan Glazer (Pluto: Very topical film title, if you look into it enough). What movies did you watch recently?

Watched Tetsuo: The Iron Man recently. Damn, the stop-motion effects and visual style really give it a great look. I really love watching a movie for the first time and suddenly recognizing all the other films it’s inspired. Tetsuo’s transformation at the end clearly inspired the finale of Akira, which was neat to realize. I’m also a sucker for films about transhumanism, so this was right up my alley.

On a less artistic note, I rewatched both Conan the Barbarian films. Although #2 is definitely written like trash, I have to admit that the score is great. I couldn’t help laughing when Arnold wrestled with the ice wizard who was just a guy in a cheap lizard mask. #1 is still excellent, and James Earl Jones is absolutely iconic as Thulsa Doom. It also has a great soundtrack, and the fight scenes are a treat.

@thilo@lemmy.ml avatar

Patrick Willems made a good video about Tenet. He calls it a Vibes Movie, in his explanation all the secret agent movies, like Bond, Mission Impossible, are vibes movies where the plot is actually meaningless. Tenet ups this to eleven. IMHO Nolan is a serial perpetrator of over his own head concepts, but I nevertheless like his movies because the’re at least not franchises.

pandapoo, in M. Night Shyamalan speaks out on the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show by Netflix!

This is funny, but also a joke… it’s from The Onion.

Also, the new live action Avatar is really bad. Not as bad as the movie, but that’s the nicest thing I can say about it.

jol,

Disagree. It’s a good live action. My So never watched the cartoon and is enjoying it in its own merit.
