Stereolab's 1999 album Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night stands in my view as a true art-pop/post-rock masterpiece. So I find it bewildering that reviewers at the time panned it viciously, with remarks like "Frigid noodling, insipid harmonies, and unmemorable repetition…from yawning French-poseurs" and "You have to admit they’re good at what they do. But then so was Hitler." Sure, not everyone's cup of tea, but yikes.
