fiat_lux,

I don't speak Portuguese, but this article just says he was a sanitation worker who stormed the government buildings with others, it doesn't say if he did any specific organisation or violence.

Compare and contrast that 17 years sentence with the sentences of ~5 years Jan 6th US rioters have received, because it's almost the exact same situation. Very interesting.

angrymouse,

This specific guy recordesmultiplee videos of himself in the Congress with discusses inciting a coup. He was indicted with 2 different crimes related to coup de etat: abolition of the state with violence (it is “estado de direito” in Portuguese, idk if there is an English expression for this) and tentative of coup de etat and then with multiple crimes related to depredation of public patrimonies, criminal association and some others. These crimes are being judged by the supreme court directly and their thesis is that these crimes where well documented and perpetrated as a group so there is no need to prove exactly what someone did, just that they were associated and had similar intentions (as this guy made clearly in multiple videos he made himself).

Is important to mention that in my opinion, our last presidents (except Bolsonaro) had indicated more independent Judges, they are from different schools but they are very independent of partys, in contrast with what I believe is the US supreme court.

fiat_lux,

Thanks for the extra context! English language media can be really superficial in coverage of things from non-English-speaking countries, and it seems that's true here too.

It seems like "rule of law" is the closest term in English for "estado de direito", at least that's what the UN uses. I'm unsure if the US has specific criminal laws around that. It seems that Brasil emphasises mutual responsibilities for governments and citizens whereas the US uses the phrase more to talk about the government's obligations.

Based on my limited understanding of both countries, anyway. I am very glad to hear the Brazilian supreme court is still mostly functioning properly though.
