What are you playing this weekend? 2023-11-24

It’s Thanksgiving weekend!

I just finished Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the game is really good. I liked the court room sections a lot more than investigation parts. Both were pretty fun though. To rate the best case, I would go with Episode 4 (Lake Gourd), Episode 3 (Steel Samurai) was more “fun” but Episode 4 was more intense, and overall much better, I think.

Still playing Nioh on PS5. The game has started to feel a bit repetitive. Similar looking areas with pretty much same enemies repeating. Unlike Demon’s Souls where each region / world was completely different biome with different enemies. Still enjoying it while playing, but don’t feel too much like starting it. So, not sure if I’ll finish it or not.

I wanted to start Super Mario RPG next, but ended up spending my gaming money somewhere else, so went through my backlog and started Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1. The game has some fanservice, but I am liking the 4th wall breaking humour.

What about all of you? What have you been playing? or are you taking a break from gaming and spending all time with family this weekend?

Astaroth,

Advance Wars By Web

Well, not sure if it counts, since it’s an online pvp fansite based on Advance Wars 1~2 and Dual Strike, but I’ve been playing it at least a few times every week for a while now.

Looked it up, this looks nice.

I haven’t played Advanced Wars yet, so going to ignore that, but after playing the game, would try it out.

How far along are you? And how are you enjoying it?

nocturne213,

Pokemon Violet, i am trying to get through the full story so i can start in on the DLC.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Second DLC is releasing soon too. Looking forward to it?

nocturne213,

Very much so. That is the other reason I am trying to get up to date with Violet.

I kind of took a Pokémon hiatus years ago and have not been playing current since Platinum I think. Before that I was playing every version since Leaf Green.

SVcross,
@SVcross@lemmy.world avatar

BOTW, on a kinda weird Random mode, by making a list a shrines and randomising them. Because I dunno.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

lol, that does truly sound random. 😀 But as long as you are having fun, what does it matter how you play.

ViscloReader,

I’m currently playing Metroid zero mission on my modded 3ds and I’m having a blast. It’s amazing

davemeech,

I play through this one at least once a year. Timeless.

I've made little progress in Baten Kaitos' New Game Minus. Skipping past all cutscenes and dialogues and still being able to oneshot every boss is just not particularly interesting. The game truly starts when enemy encounters start to outspeed me, I guess.

This week, I also got my new PC up and running. And so I do what anyone with a beefy new PC would do: Play an older game I could have played on my old PC whenever I wanted to! I've been playing Batman: Arkham Origins. I've played the game and its predecessors on console already, but for completion's sake I'm doing them again on Steam before eventually playing Arkham Knight for the first time, which would not have run on my old PC, at least not well. I love this series. Origins isn't very well received, but I think it's underrated. It definitely has flaws, but it doesn't deserve that much hate. But to be honest, all it takes to make me happy is a set of Predator Maps with a varied group of playable characters. It's just a shame that, unlike the previous Arkham titles, I can't really complete the game. Some achievements are linked to a long-defunct online mode. It's been restored by the community, but I really don't care about it.

I also want to eventually get into the Shantae series. I've played one of them on the Wii U (Pirate's Curse, I believe?), so I've gone back to the very beginning and started Shantae on the Game Boy! The spritework and animations are quite impressive for Nintendo's old handheld brick, though I've run into some issues differentiating between foreground and background objects. The number of times I've fallen through a platform that was actually in the background is too damn high! I've only made it to the second town because I stopped to grind the money necessary to get some expensive items that unlock new moves. I'm sure I would get the money eventually, but armed with just the hair whip alone I find the game difficult in a way that's not fun.

How’s Shantae other than the background / foreground issue? It has been on my wishlist for a long time, and now that all of them are on Switch, I was thinking about starting from the first game.

sdcSpade,

I expected it to be a more simple platformer, since it's on the Game Boy, but it's actually a lot more open the same way future games in the series are. But I can't say much more than that yet. Like I said, I've been mostly grinding money because just getting to the second town with just your basic attack was an ordeal.

Interesting. Will keep that in mind.

Much the same as last week for me. Beat Mario Wonder's final boss; it, and especially the levels preceding it, were absolutely fantastic in my eyes. Also tackled said final boss with the Jet Run badge equipped, because that's totally a good idea. Just need to sweep the game for collectables and levels I missed now, including every regular desert level in the desert world. Bit odd that they introduce the sand mechanic in the world's Poplin House, only for all the levels using it to be optional.

Started the Triple Deluxe replay I was thinking about as well; thus far, I've bested the first world, affirmed I'm still terrible at the Dedede's Drum Dash subgame, and had a very stupid (and very impossible) idea about trying to beat the game without the B button. Whilst you can damage all enemies with the Beetle ability's hover (heck, I defeated the first boss doing just that), it's a rather difficult strategy to execute, and Hypernova exists, which would dramatically inflate the B button presses every time it appears. Might be more feasible in Planet Robobot, though.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

lol, that is a tough challenge. Good luck!

dinckelman,

I’ve just finished Life Is Strange: True Colors. If you’ve loved 1 and BtS, you’ll also really like this. It is interesting, it is interactive, there are a lot of choices, and the world is full of little memories to find throughout your playthrough. Unfortunately the game is a little short, even by LiS standards, and some people may find the writing a little odd and abrupt in places. Personally, I’d give it an 8.5/10

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

By BtS do you mean Beyond Two Souls? Or something else.

dinckelman,

Before The Storm, the Life is Strange 1 prequel

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I should’ve looked it up probably. I still haven’t played the original Life Is Strange though, even though I have it in my backlog for years, so not paying attention to sequels / prequels yet. Have been thinking of starting Life Is Strange or Until Dawn these days, maybe once I finish Nioh.

dinckelman,

Definitely get 1 and Before The Storm. Excellent experiences

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@lemmy.world avatar

Finished Radiant Silvergun!

Well, at least on the lowest difficulty, but I got to see the ending of the story which was surprisingly interesting. I’ll keep playing it from time to time, next goal is beat it on Arcade Mode.

Started Super Mario RPG!

So far it feels very faithful to the SNES version. If that’s a good or bad thing… it depends on who you ask.

If you played it back in the SNES days it’s going to be a great nostalgia trip, but if you never played the original game it’s going to feel bit dated and lacking in depth. It’s a very fun game, but not sure it’s worth paying full price without the nostalgia part.

Should be fairly close to the end, I think I’ll be able to finish it this weekend.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, that’s what I keep hearing about Super Mario RPG, that it’s a very faithful remake. I don’t mind older games, so can’t wait to get to it soon.

davemeech,

I agree with your sentiment, I love it because it was my favourite game growing up, but I feel like it would be hit or miss for someone playing for the first time.

I’m playing it this weekend as well, STILL trying to hit 100+ super jumps.

heyfluxay,

I’ve exclusively been playing ranked matches in Halo Infinite. I don’t really know why, but definitely needed to scratch some sort of fps itch.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

How is it now? I remember people were complaining a lot about non-gameplay parts at launch.

heyfluxay,

I played a ton at launch, but yes, new content just didn’t come out and the player base dwindled.

Seems to have a resurgence of late. Custom maps from forge, additional playlists, cross amor core customization, I think has all helped.

Ultimately, I just like the competitive mp aspect.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Nice. I am not a big MP fan, but it’s nice to see that they fixed the complaints.

PlasticExistence,

Nor am I. Last time I got into any of them was when I enjoyed playing Splatoon 2 for a bit. Unfortunately the matching was really bad when I played, and the disconnections were worse. So you’d get people - probably little kids - on your team who wouldn’t play as a team, then one would get disconnected and you’d have zero chace of winning. Even playing my absolute best wasn’t enough in those situations. Heck, even if I were matched with all adults, that single disconnect would screw everyone.

I found that ultimately it wasn’t fun. No idea if any of that improved over time or if Splatoon 3 was any better. I am now, and always have been, a much bigger fan of single player experiences.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

I think Nintendo games in general have bad reputation for their network code. I don’t play online much so can’t compare, but have seen people regularly complaining about Splatoon, Smash and Mario Kart online issues.
