mgorny,

Unpopular opinion: planned obsolescence is not only pursued by corporations that benefit from it. It's also pushed forward by unaffiliated #OpenSource developers.

If you write inefficient and resource-hungry software (because "your time is valuable" and "space is cheap"), you push it forward. If you choose a newfangled programming language with portability issues, you push it forward. If you straightaway reject support for old hardware, you push it forward.

@mgorny I disagree. Or rather I don't see an issue with it.

If I write bad code for myself and happen to it, why is it my problem that it doesn't work well for you?

You're free to fix it up for your use cas. That's kind of the point of permissive open source.

mgorny,

@bmaxv, that's one point of view.

Another point of view is that if you publish something, you need to take at least some responsibility for it.

If we were to push this to the extreme, let's say that I made a popular yet very inefficient game. A lot of people have upgraded their hardware to play it, and are wasting a lot of energy doing that. I would feel bad about that.

@mgorny but how old is old @ hardware? :P

For example, supporting x86_64-v1 hardware seems to be worse for ecology IMHO?

mgorny,

@raito, maybe it is, it's not for me to judge. I'm merely the middleman who gets complaints from users for whom software doesn't work, and from upstreams who don't want to be bothered about hardware their software doesn't work on.
