What's up with KartaView pushing Android app updates with no changes to their Github source code?

If you look at their Github account, there hasn’t been a commit to their Android app in 3 years: github.com/kartaview/android

However, their Google Play listing shows it was last updated on February 8, 2024. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.telenav…

When Grab Holdings acquired KartaView, did they just take the open source code and start working on a proprietary copy? It’s MIT licensed which allows commercial use.

Honestly I don’t know but I would use F-droid if it bothers you.

They changed the license from LGPL to MIT when they aquired, it was in their blog:

Open Source: Good news, the code license is changing from LGPL to the more permissive MIT license. The imagery license will remain the same, CC BY-SA version 4.

With LGPL they would have to publish changes.

Thanks, this makes sense now. Unfortunately, the code is now closed source which means there are no open source street level imagery platforms for OSM that I’m aware of with mobile apps.

You can just take photos with any app, than upload it from a computer with the kartaview uploader, which is still foss: github.com/kartaview/upload-scripts

There is also the similar Panoramax/Geovisio and the full platform is foss (yet): gitlab.com/geovisio/web-viewer/

A public instance is hosted by osm france: panoramax.openstreetmap.fr No mobileapp, but you can upload on the website or with a similar cli tool: gitlab.com/geovisio/cli
