xpinchx,

Me and my fiance both just got 7800x3d chips, they’re amazing for gaming.

greybeard,

I’m a server admin(among the many hats) and the Epyc processors really kick ass. The only downside is Microsoft draconian licensing scheme for severs that is tied to core count. It doesn’t matter if the host is running another OS, if you have a single Windows VM you have to license all cores on the host.

conciselyverbose,

That's anticompetitive as fuck.

Their argument is that you could technically bump the VM to more cores super temporarily and then switch it back to just one or two for licensing purposes and it wouldn’t change the VM’s fingerprint. And they want to license per core because people started using servers with many cores and many sockets and would only use one license. I’m sure if they could get away with it, they’d charge you for every computer even if you have a single Windows installation just in case.

Oracle does that too IIRC. Gotta shell out for the hardware, and give extra to big daddy too because you’re using the software more.

It’s extremely predatory and stupid. One of many reasons to run Linux on your servers. There’s no reason not to except maybe for a few pet boxes to run AD or whatever you need for enterprise Windows to work.
