Fuck that, I’m 36 and doing a soft-retire in 6 weeks and counting!
I still need to earn $5,000 usd/yr (in the US) to survive, but that’s easy enough and I’ve basically checked out of society. I’m no longer interested in spending all my time in this single life I get… selling my labor for a very small fraction of the value.
(Before anyone asks, my step-dad lent me his credit score in 2013 and co-signed a cheap-ass foreclosure. Houses of the exact same quality and cost presently exist in other likewise undesirable parts of the US, like Indiana, where I could buy basically the house I have now for what I paid in 2013, which was 65k. Mine is worth a bit more now, but those will be in a decade too.)

It’s one leg up, not a bunch, and it was only available because my mother died, my step-dad sold my family home, and moved in with his girlfriend. I didn’t get a penny of inheritance because he was alive and they were still technically married, so that’s what I got.
I’ve lived in poverty most of my life, haven’t been able to secure permanent employment, only contracts, and were it not for locking in cheap housing in my mid 20s (which is still available with the same deals I got! Like I said) I’d probably have ended up dead by now because I haven’t had financial stability. So yeah, I’ll take that one single piece of stability I have and check out of society with it.
I don’t need to check my privilege, I’m well aware of what I have and don’t, and that not everyone can semi-retire at 36, but I also didn’t say anything about anyone other than myself in that comment, so idk what you are so pissy about.

Bullshit. I will work till I am dead because I enjoy my work. It doesn’t matter how hard it is. I like my work because it’s hard. The moment one stops to work they mentally degrade. I have seen it countless times. We are biological machines meant to put an effort into survival. And this survival has changed in many ways in our modern society, but it’s survival never the less. The moment we stop to work for our survival is the moment our body and mind degrade. It’s like a muscle that you no longer train.
My mother has been retired for 20 years now and she’s sharp as a tack. She works on whatever she wants to work on, instead of only working for someone else. You don’t have to spend your retirement sitting around watching price is right. If you think you only retain your mind while you’re grinding your fingers to the bone for someone else you’ve been deluded by the big lie.
