Volunteers from @bikeloudpdx shouldn't need to stand in front of #PBOT contractors' trucks to stop them from removing #pdxBikes infrastructure, but that's where we are with the current dysfunction at city hall. (Yes, even while they scramble to fill a budget hole that will cost union jobs.) Get involved and let #Portland's elected officials know that #ClimateAction, #SafeStreets & #VisionZero are popular + too important to trade for a few free on-street #parking spaces.

@enobacon @bikeloudpdx unions are a terrible inefficient substitute for a social safety net.

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@cshentrup and yet they're what we have, because that's what people organized. Seems like a good direction toward a wider social safety net, granted there's power/corruption issues possible but whatever you're proposing needs to bring them along somehow. In the case of PBOT jobs, the concern operationally, is how long it takes people to come up to speed if they do layoffs and then get money a few years later, but hiring stuff out to contracts has a whole other layer of waste and delay.

@cshentrup@mastodon.social avatar

@enobacon The goal isn't to bring them along but to destroy them.

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@cshentrup good luck convincing people of that path. It seems like most people will imagine that leading to a regression to pre-union conditions.

@enobacon social safety nets have popular support actually.

@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@cshentrup it might be a matter of how you phrase things, with the people who work for the union, and its members and supporters. In any case, the point about PBOT holding onto staff is that it takes time for people to learn the tools and work. Of course, we also need PBOT to relearn a lot institutionally about how to effectively manage a transportation system rather than just build for cars, I'm 50/50 on replace vs fix on some days though.

@enobacon @bikeloudpdx What the hell? That NE 33rd bike lane is like 3 weeks old and they are removing it? I mean, it's totally pointless since it's like a block long and has cars parked in it at all times with zero enforcement, but still...

I need to sign up for these alerts. I can almost see this intersection from my window and I wasn't there. :(

@phil the city that plans "If we had done the parking study and outreach like we should have, we would have learned months ago how some adjacent residents don’t have off-street parking and that others live in multigenerational households who need safe access to their homes... adopted plans are exactly that: plans. They are not final." 🙄
