It was amazingly noisy in the Melbourne CBD last night. Big "last days of Rome" energy as the festive season approaches...

Something I've noticed in recent years is that people tend to finish work before Xmas about a week before the actual day. When I was initially in the workforce years ago, we worked right up to and including 24 Dec. Not sure when that shift came about.

My less-than-charitable take is that as wages stagnated globally, this sort of thing became a way for employers to give something to employees instead of a good annual increase. But I am in a grouchy mood at the moment so that might color this thought....

@timrichards For me it always depended on how much annual leave I had left for the calendar year. Often by the time December came I had used so much during the year that I just had enough remaining to take off the three working days between Christmas and New Year. Which would force me to work up to and including Christmas Eve. We had strict policies about not carrying annual leave over or being recompensed for unused leave so there was no point in hoarding days.

@iskandarv I always liked working those days between Xmas and NYE, very relaxed.
