There's a Terry Pratchett HumbleBundle up and, I gotta tell you: stay the hell away from it.

These things are normally truly excellent deals: all you have to do is drop less than the cost of 2 books, struggle with HB's crappy bulk download tool, plug your kindle into a PC to drag them overand you're set for months. The Battletech and Black Library bundles I've done have been just so very, very good.

So this should be a no-brainer, right? Very wrong, apparently.

This has been the highest friction media purchase I have ever engaged with? Certainly in the last decade.

  1. Purchase Bundle
  2. Go to library
  3. No downloads, just a key (weird, but OK)
  4. Go to Kobo site.
  5. Register on Kobo site.
  6. Select each of 38 books individually.
  7. Enter key
  8. Complete Purchase.
  9. Navigate to Account/Books.
  10. Try to download books, fail.
  11. Download sketchy Adobe tool
  12. Install sketchy Adobe tool.
  13. Create Adobe account*
  14. Log in with it in the tool.

  1. Go back to Kobo.
  2. On each of 38 books, click "...", "Download", then "Download Book"
  3. Get 1-2 files for each book. 1 will throw an error, the other won't.
  4. Drag the one that won't throw an error into the sketchy Adobe tool.
  5. Do this 37 more times.
  6. Adobe tool has generated ePubs. Find them.
  7. Now open Calibre**
  8. Import those ePubs into Calibre.
  9. Plug your Kindle in.
  10. Have Calibre convert those files to Mobi and send them to your Kindle.

I would call this online transaction "actively hostile." Deeply awful. I'm clearly pretty angry about it.

  • That's right: you need 3 accounts to purchase this thing: a HumbleBundle account, a clownshow Kobo account, and Christ help us an Adobe account.

** You also need 2 intermediate Windows applications to get these books: ADE to get the ePub and (otherwise very useful) Calibre to convert it to mobi. If you don't have a PC: just get fucked, I guess?

@rushputin I used to own a Kobo, decent devices and the process of buying a book in the store was usually pretty good

But when I needed to replace it, there were bugger all available in the UK and I bought a Kindle, and damn the process of turning my Kobo books into ePubs was a chew on

Of course then Calibre still had to make a mobi file (ugh) but that was pretty simple

@biggeordiegeek @rushputin this is why I only buy the Barnes and Noble Nook devices. Their store and devices use epub natively. I've never had trouble getting my books or loading them. The DRM is also easily removed so I never have to worry about their store disappearing.
