It's in my bio but in case it wasn't clear, since today is the day, I'm a trans woman. I came out in 1998.

My number one wish for today: trans representation in popular entertainment. Representation, showing minorities as real people rather than caricatures, makes it harder for the haters to spread their venom and infect others.

@dgoldsmith I recall HR prepping us. When HR calls a surprise meeting, it was usually layoffs, so that was a tense day right up until they told us.

@alexr Huh. No one in that meeting ever told me that. I think it was Friday, Nov 20, 1998. Sorry if it was stressful…

@dgoldsmith I was relieved. It all made sense. ❤️

HR pulled that on me another time and it was to let us know that John Morley has passed.

@alexr That's always a shock, especially if it's a young person. Someone on my team I've known for decades passed away last year—John Jenkins. We were all devastated.

@alexr @dgoldsmith I recall coming to work at Apple one day and getting an HR email informing of your transition, which I imagine you wrote yourself.

I’m eternally grateful to those were brave enough to transition at a time when it was a huge risk. Thanks to friends who’d transitioned, accepting my own child as trans was so much easier. It was still an emotional bridge to cross, but in the end it just came down to her happiness.

So, thank you for being you and being brave.

@TPOHolmes @alexr I'm so glad if my transition was able to help anyone else in any way.

I didn’t write the email; my manager and HR did. I was fortunate that the company was supportive even in that era. I did know at the time that I was far from the first person to transition at Apple.

I guess I was brave if your definition of brave is “do something even if it terrifies you.” 😉 I’ve never felt brave, because I didn't transition until I had no other choice. I wanted to when I was 8.

@dgoldsmith @alexr Brave IS doing the thing that terrifies you.
