The Falkland Islands, initially named Îles Malouines by French explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1764, saw British establishment in 1766 with Port Egmont. John Strong named Falkland Sound in 1690. Spanish rule introduced Islas Malvinas, later Argentina's 1982 attempt to reclaim it was unsuccessful. Presently, the UN recognizes it as Falkland Islands (Malvinas), except in Spanish, where it's Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands).
