insect encounter from 2024 04 20

i have developed some skill for catching flies that sneak into the house using the "window corner and jar" method. this particular fly however was very lively, refusing to land. spraying it a little got it to calm down and i was able to catch it and release it :)

fly frantically flying inside of glass jar water spray bottle that was used to temporarily calm down the fly is seating nearby

@gay_ornithischians if you catch a fly in a clear jar with the mouth pointed down, and hold the jar up so the mouth is totally unimpeded (but still pointing down), i wonder how long it would take for the fly to find its way out

@apophis it depends on the fly i think. some flies find the smallest opening immediately and fly away when you think you have them. occasionally there is one that does not seem to realize it can get away and stays for a little while once the jar is open
