spider encounter from 2024 04 24

my sibling called me so i could go and capture a HUGE and UGLY spider (they live next door)

it's actually small and cute

i used to release spiders i caught into vegetated areas but Matt Bertone personally shamed me not to (i read an informative article by him). i now place them in the laundry room. because one of the walls has breeze blocks abundant prey can fly in

@apophis no. it was on a conventional news site, but i don't remember which one
that one does make me reconsider tho. i should make an effort to id the species before i decide where to place them. fwiw there is a vegetated area past the breeze block wall. not sure if the spiders that prefer that kind of habitat would be smart enough to drop down on their own tho

releasing this one proved difficult. it did not want to leave the jar. once out it kept frantically "pawing" (to try and find the jar?) and almost flung itself into the inside of the washing machine several times in it's attempts. whenever i blocked the fall with the jar it immediatly pressed itself to the wall of the jar and tucked itself into a little ball. i was able to use a piece of paper and the jar to move it to a corner where i quickly lost track of it
