Shit this is a real lame ass question. But want yall opinion?
Do yall feel it difficult to say I love you?
Yesterday my Momma said ' I love you jaden' and I found it real difficult to say back. I just said ' you too' and I felt so guilty as I left that I didn't say it back properly. I just couldn't.
This has really been playing on my mind.
Is this just me? Is this normal?
I do love her , but I can't say it !

@Jaden3 I became more liberal with both saying it and showing it as I grew older. I actually had to work it out, like a muscle. It takes real effort, and I have to mean it. My logic is like, "What am I holding on to this for? I can't use it, might as well give it to the people I want to see happy!"

@tobi yep I think the first time is the most difficult. I just gonna try shit that all I can say 🙏🏿

@Jaden3 A lot of people have that issue. It makes a lot of men, specifically, feel vulnerable, and we're taugh to avoid that in order to be "strong." But vulnerability is how we give and receive love, so it's actually pretty weak to not be able to do that (IMO).

If you're looking for advice, I'd say tell her that it makes you feel uncomfortable, so she knows why you might look awkward, but you're going to keep doing it anyway until it doesn't feel weird any more. Because she's your mom.

@OrionKidder I need to !

@Jaden3 @lydialurch With the caveat that I'm aware cultural differences probably don't make this super useful, yeah, I said I love you to my parents a LOT when they were alive. (Which is remarkable, since in some ways, I didn't like them very much, and I certainly have trauma related to them. But that was one thing we still always said.) And I literally drown my kid in love yous. I probably tell my wife and kid I love them 50 or 60 times a day? I'm literally a broken record.

@drcrypt @lydialurch that's good 👍🏾

Ferrum,

@Jaden3 I’ve felt similarly. Not sure if its for the same reason, but for me I felt pressured to say ‘I love you’ back because if I didn’t it would be seen as starting a conflict. So saying ‘I love you’ in response didn’t feel genuine. So the phrase stopped meaning so much because I couldn’t use it when I truly meant it. Now saying it feels wrong and awkward

Jaden3,
@Jaden3@mastodon.social avatar

@Ferrum what do you say now?

Ferrum,

@Jaden3 sorry i dont have a solution, its just youre not alone in that

@Jaden3@mastodon.social avatar

@Ferrum shit so pleased on that fr 🙌🏾
