I am always trying to cook like the locals do when on holiday.

Today: Pasta.

How much oil am I supposed to put into the boiling water and for how long do I rinse the pasta with cold water after it is soft boiled? 🤔

Kid saw his 5th garbage truck today and is beyond happy. It is a Sunday, so, kudos Lignano!

@derthomas a teaspoon of oil, and you can probably get away with a quick rinse as you don’t want to cool the pasta down too much.

@satsuma I still think Italians might get a heart attack reading this 😜
Am I right, @neurothing or @heavymetalrick ?

@derthomas @satsuma @neurothing yeah ☠️ btw no oil is needed when making pasta. Pot full of water, once it's boiling add some cooking salt and the pasta. Cook for 10ish minutes and it's done!

@heavymetalrick @satsuma @neurothing I learned that some years ago, but a lot of Austrians still cook it with oil 😬 And if you get your pasta al dente, you can consider yourself lucky. We tend to boild it do death...

heavymetalrick,
@heavymetalrick@metalhead.club avatar

@derthomas @satsuma @neurothing damn, I can't even imagine how pasta would taste when made with oil...

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

@heavymetalrick @satsuma @neurothing not much different tbh. It's not for the flavor but for making them "not sticky". No idea if that even helps 🤷‍♂️
Also, we learn to eat them with fork and spoon. I guess that's also not very Italian? 😬

@derthomas @heavymetalrick @satsuma Hello @derthomas ! Hope you are enjoying your trip!
Well, I don't know if there is someone in Italy who puts oil in boiling water, but I assure you that I didn't see this in every home I was where there is pasta as a meal. Neither I do it when I cook my pennette 😊

Thus, put the oil only when you get the cooked pasta out of boiling water and into a bowl big enough, mixing it with the dreasing you've chosen. 😉

When you cook the pasta, you can also:

  • fill the post with water and put it on the burner
  • wait until the water boils. Put salt.
  • throw in the pasta and cover the pot with its lid. Make sure it's well closed. This is important for the next point.
  • switch the burner off (yeah)
  • wait until the pasta is cooked (read the minutes on the package. Wait for 30-40 seconds more).
  • drain the pasta
  • put it into a bowl and mix it with the oil and the dressing

@derthomas @heavymetalrick @satsuma Just be assured to reach a good boiling before putting the pasta. Then turn off the burner only when the lid is on 😉

@derthomas @satsuma @neurothing eh to each pasta its utensil, so that tracks, kind of

@derthomas @heavymetalrick @satsuma And don't worry for the way you are eating it. Use whatever makes you feel comfortable. You don't have to "feel Italian" to enjoy a good pasta dish.

I don't have to feel Chinese when I eat rice with chopsticks. I just want to eat it. 🙂
