ech0,

If you’re born in '89 just add 11 to the current year and you have your age (34). This works for any year you’re born.

Born in ''83? Just add 17 to the current year. You have your age (40)

OtherPetard,

tbf, it may not be hard to calculate, but it is hard to admit I’m almost halfway my thirties…

Also born in 89, I can say I was still born in the Soviet Union.

intensely_human,

Why do people even calculate this? It’s an integer you only have to increment once a year. Just remember your age.

seb,
@seb@feddit.de avatar

Also for you to calculate your age you have to remember your birthday, thats like 3 integers, vs. just 1 for your age!

GrapefruitDoggo,

I hardly remember what I was doing 5 seconds ago. Sure, that’s more complicated than a number, and I think about my age rather frequently so remembering it is rather easy, but storing anything for a year and remembering it when I haven’t thought about it for a while is difficult.

McJonalds,

as i get older i find myself wondering sometimes if im still my age or the next one already

You’d be surprised…

nekothegamer,
@nekothegamer@sh.itjust.works avatar

same for people born in 2010

Virgo,

Born in 99. Can confirm I just take the year and say I was that age for most of it

Spoilt,

The hardest is my parents’ age.

  • 1965 to 2000 -> 35
  • 2000 to 2023 -> 23
  • 35 + 23 = brain leaking
imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I usually add 50 to their birth year and add/subtract the remainder from that date. So for 1965 I’d say they were 50 in 2015, so that makes them 58 in 2023. Makes the mental math easier for me.

But I never even realized that was how I did it until I saw your version written out and was like “huh, that’s really confusing”

xePBMg9,

Unless you are like me. I forget what year it is.

_spiffy,
@_spiffy@lemmy.ca avatar

This is half the problem for me!

eochaid,
@eochaid@lemmy.world avatar

Math like that is really simple if you take it in easy chunks.

For example, to calc your age, just take the years from birthday to 2000 (11) and add it to the years since 2000 (23). 11 + 23 = 34.

Best part is the first calc never changes - so if you remember thst number it’s just like having a 2000 birthday. Just add 11.

_spiffy,
@_spiffy@lemmy.ca avatar

But I’m only 33! So part of the challenge is also remembering what day it is today lol

Korne127,
@Korne127@lemmy.world avatar

There’s still the part of the year before the birthday and the part of the year after the birthday.

Dayman773,

I was born in January 2000. For a very short period of time I don’t know how old I am or what year it is, but then the rest of the year is pretty easy after that.

ferrodegaragem,

I’m from December 2000, so I need to make the current year -1 to be exact.

QueenAlucia,

Does anybody need to calculate their age? It’s not a hard thing to remember :|

AccountMaker,

I do. I know my age roughly of course, but I very very rarely get asked how old I am, so I forget the extact number.

MarekKnapek,

It changes all the time (once per year) if you finally managed to remember it, it changes again.

Robbsen1,

Sometimes I just forget ok? I mean it’s changing every year

Also I think it matters less and less in your life. As a child/teenager you got asked for your age all the time

netvor,
@netvor@lemmy.world avatar

The hard part is which one will you remember. (I already had 43 different ages.)

MystikIncarnate,

As someone who is well out of the range where people need to ask for ID when I want something, I don’t concern myself with my age and frequently forget since nobody asks.

On official forms, they want to know my date of birth, not my age. Everyone I know socially, doesn’t care or already knows an approximation of it, thus I’m never asked. All my work colleagues are interested in is getting the job done, not how many years I’ve been in the workforce/how many years till I get to retirement age/whatever.

I don’t think about my age for more than a few hours a year at most. I don’t even celebrate my birthday. So the years come and go, and I think about how old I am so little that I often don’t even know how old I am.

You’re not wrong that it’s not hard to remember, but when you think about it as little as I do, you tend to lose track… So when someone asks me how old I am, I often don’t reply because I’m too busy doing math in my head to try to figure it out, quietly hoping they’ll move on from the question and I won’t have to answer it.

CaldeiraG,

Jan 2000 here :)

_spiffy,
@_spiffy@lemmy.ca avatar

Dang thats the money.

CaldeiraG,

Indeed, I was supposed to born on the 31st Dec 1999 but didn’t feel like it I guess :)

dcatdemon,

Yeah it’s hard to calculate when reality sets in. There’s also a bit of reluctance from me as a lot of expectations follow me when I reveal my age even when I don’t look like how old I am. It’s like suddenly you feel that you are not so welcome in some conversations any more or people keep you out of their circles because they presume that you don’t fit in.

I’ve gotten way past that and while realising that my body isn’t what it was physically 20 years ago, I’m treating age as just a number and if one has a problem with that, it’s really their problem not mine 🙂

And by the way, I was born in 1971.

narikov,

I thought I had it easy. Born in 1990. 2022? I’m 32. 2023? I’m 33.

But now I am married. Dec 2019. So it’s always hard to calculate how many years.

And to add to it. My daughter is born Nov 2021.

Good luck to anyone that asks me how old she is. You gotta wait until I count on all my fingers.

_spiffy,
@_spiffy@lemmy.ca avatar

I have a daughter who is 6 and a son who is 4. So when people ask what year they are born I need to try and do reverse math.
