Candelestine, in ‘It Feels True!’ Russell Brand Embraces Maui Conspiracy Theories Even He Knows Are Not True

Let me spell it out for you, Russell. There is a conspiracy. People realized they could make more money if they took down the unions and axed government regulations, so nobody could stop them from doing whatever they want at the workplace they own.

So, they convinced half the people who claim to love Jesus to ignore the things he actually said, and to put their faith into completely unrestrained capitalism instead. Because greed is good, right?

They did wreck most of the unions, they did manage to gut a lot of regulations, and they’re just trying to finish the job. But that’s not a very good campaign strategy generally, few people are sure if they like trickle-down economics, so instead they campaign on culture war issues and appealing to the paranoid crazies.

Boom. Conspiracy solved. Not so mysterious, really, just some logical moves that make complete sense, and that can be seen plain-as-day just by looking at what your politicians actually vote for, and listening to what they actually say.

Hallainzil,

You’re right, it is the fault of the trans people!

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are… are you saying Scooby Doo isn’t real?!

SayJess,
@SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Scooby Doo was just a scapegoat created by the CIA in the 60’s to distract from their campaign against The Animaniacs. It all fits if you don’t think about it at all.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

WHAT ABOUT SANTA CLAUS?!

SayJess,
@SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Oh my sweet summer child…

I’m surprised this isn’t talked about more. The FBI, as well as the globalist Hollywood elite, forced Santa to star in the film Christmas with the Kranks under the pseudonym Tim Allen. This was a successful smear campaign to sew doubt in the public’s belief that Tim Allen was Santa Clause.

Of course, Santa wasn’t actually in that movie. Well, not his physical self at least. We are all lead to believe that deepfake technology is a new phenomena, but it’s usage goes back much further. How many people now believe that Santa starred in a show about an idiot with a home improvement show? The now classic grunt that is Allen’s catch phrase sounds a lot like a bastardized Ho, Ho, Ho!

Was Santa ever real? Or did he go to jail on trumped up cocaine charges in the 80’s? The waters are so muddied that even the greatest skeptics debate it to this day.

Again, this all makes so much sense if you don’t think about it, or the timeline in which it occurred, at all.

Also big fan, but I was always convinced his Orch OR stuff was completely batshit. I would love to be proven wrong.

uriel238, in The Vatican declares that it can no longer confirm the supernatural... but you can worship it anyway.
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

So are they going as far as to say the Resurrection of Jesus was likely to be ahistorical?

We’re used to a post-Newtonian world being free of ghosts, fairies and divine intervention. But recognizing that their own origins are mythical would be a significant step.

It’s as much admitted to seminaries, just not to the laity.

itsgroundhogdayagain, in The Vatican declares that it can no longer confirm the supernatural... but you can worship it anyway.

Aren’t miracles “supernatural”? Don’t people need 2 “confirmed” miracles to be considered for sainthood?

uriel238,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes. And hagiography deals in manufacturing a myth by asserting it cannot be disproven with available data.

FauxPseudo, in The Vatican declares that it can no longer confirm the supernatural... but you can worship it anyway.
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

Never thought I’d see the day when the Vatican would take a “We can’t prove anything is supernatural” position. This is a big day for skepticism.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It is in the sense that they’re not actively promoting the supernatural, but this wishy-washy approach where they say you can still believe in it if you want to and there’s nothing wrong with venerating supernatural things we can’t confirm to be real is not as helpful as it could be.

FauxPseudo,
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

For a 2000 year old institution this is a big move. I’ll take any win I can get out of them.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right. I shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

uriel238,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m also glad to let the Roman Catholic Church render itself obsolete and irrelevant. The participation of the USCCB in the Christian nationalist movement, and the Catholic Federalist Society wing of SCOTUS is going to cause a heavy backlash against the entire church, including the Holy See if it continues to push dogma-driven doctrine and further strip civil rights.

It’s really time for religious institutions to resign from their position as the second estate.

TachyonTele,

If I’m reading it correctly, they realized that with smartphones and the internet any/everyone can plainly see these miracles are fake, so they’re proactively sidestepping the entire thing.

mindbleach, in The Ideological Subversion of Biology

Bitching about trying not to do racism?

Ah, no: bitching about trying not to do transphobia. Starting off by fucking up sex and gender. No politics anywhere are stifling your ability to talk about does versus bucks. We are talking about people. You have a moral duty to minimize harm, even when describing true things. If you feel constrained by guidelines to avoid fueling bigots then imagine how their targets feel about bigots given fuel.

Teachers have been hounded out of their jobs and deprived of their classes simply for declaring that human sex is binary.

I appeared on “Fox and Friends,” a Fox News program, and explained that sex is binary and biological.

Yeah simply for agreeing with fascists, on national television, to promote their anti-trans bigotry. Using the full weight of your institution’s gravitas. Posterior bootprint deserved.

To a biologist, this kind of blank-slateism—which may stem partly from the Marxist faith in the infinite malleability of humans—is profoundly wrong.

Aaand the author blames communism. Fuck off with this garbage. People avoiding bell-curve scientific-sexism prejudice are not picking a fight with numbers or biology, they are trying to protect real living persons, from politics, using politics.

Your discipline interacts with reality. Your actions affect people, in the here and now. You want it to just be the medical stuff! You want it to just be the breakthroughs from unrestrained curiosity. But pop-science that emerges organically has excused, bolstered, or outright caused immense human suffering. People are getting on top of that shit, to help you avoid providing cover for monsters.

Oh hey, and they do get around to bitching about trying not to do racism! Look: to some extent race and ethnicity need to be cleaved apart like sex and gender, so when someone says one of them is kinda bullshit, their meaning is clear. Outside of bad-faith misrepresentation like this article started off with for sex and gender. Whoopsie doodle. But the larger picture is that oh my god your own fucking example is a guy saying some ethnic groups might be dumber. That’s your defense? That’s the argument! Nooo shit people get in trouble “for merely suggesting the possibility” that we could rank the races. To scoff and sputter like you can’t see the harm in that is either being so far up the ivory tower you need an oxygen tank… or just being a bigot, yourself.

Underlined a thousand times by the next paragraph beginning ‘well everyone knows IQ tests already prove some groups are automatically dumber.’

To the author’s undue credit, closing out with woo-woo nonsense suggests the former. But just fucking barely. They still dropped a link to a guy who was invited on Fox News to effectively say trans people are faking it, as if that guy facing consequences was incomprehensible. Motherfucker you namedropped creationism. You know debate doesn’t work on frauds! You know that showing up to call bullshit, can often promote bullshit! That’s why they want to debate you! Showing up to agree, but then split hairs, isn’t even partial credit. You fail. You actively made the world a little bit worse, just because you couldn’t imagine an audience outside tightly-puckered academia.

You want to keep this shit amongst yourselves until you figure assholes won’t abuse it? Go back to writing it in Latin.

VizualWarrior, in The Ideological Subversion of Biology

Hmmmm what are your thoughts on this? I thought it was interesting and very opinionated. The authors are definitely clear on their stance. I’ll admit, I skimmed bits and read others, but it felt more like this essay was comprised of things they just wanted to get off their chest and not a means to try and sway any detractors. Which maybe was the point, but it left me wanting.

Streetlights,

It’s certainly opinionated, polemical even. I would encourage you to read it in its entirety and follow some of many links they’ve included to make their case. I myself have subjectively noticed the same changes in science journalism over the last decade that the authors are highlighting, particularly in SciAm.
