Police oversight is an especially bad joke in Louisiana

Louisiana’s police oversight board permanently revoked the badges of 15 officers Thursday, including an officer involved in the 2015 fatal shooting of a 6-year-old Marksville boy.

A judge had actually ordered years ago that Officer Norris Greenhouse, Jr., be stripped of his badge. But as a sign of how easily problematic police officers slip through the cracks in Louisiana, that condition of Greenhouse’s 2017 conviction flew below the radar of the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. …

No one was required to notify POST of the terms of Greenhouse’s plea. Unlike other states, police officers in Louisiana don’t have to self-report to POST when they’ve been convicted of crimes. Prosecutors and judges aren’t bound to share the information, either.

Derrick Stafford, the other officer involved in the killing of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis, was convicted at trial of manslaughter and sentenced to 40 years. His POST certification has lapsed while he’s behind bars, though it has not been permanently revoked. …
