Colorado governor signs 4 gun control bills five months after a mass shooting at an LGBTQ club in Colorado Springs

The new laws, which Democrats pushed through despite late-night filibusters from Republicans, are aimed at quelling rising suicides and youth violence, preventing mass shootings and opening avenues for gun violence victims to sue the long-protected firearm industry.

sugar_in_your_tea,

These seem like reasonable laws. I think there should be a way to bypass them though, i.e. by showing a recent background check (i.e. from a firearm safety class), mental soundness affirmation (from licensed mental health professional), or evidence of need (e.g. you have a hunting license and are buying a hunting rifle).

Outside of that, a waiting period and increasing the age limit should help. I think we should also raise the draft age from 18 to 21 as well. You shouldn’t be able to be drafted before you can buy a firearm, that’s dumb.

That said, this bill seems to address symptoms instead of the root cause. Why are suicides so common in Colorado? That’s what we should be discussing. In my opinion, having a clear meaning in life helps more than anything else.

tardigrada,

And this is somewhat at the other end of the spectrum: Texas governor decried for ‘disgusting’ rhetoric in wake of mass shooting

Republican Greg Abbott condemned for calling [...] victims of Friday night shooting in rural Cleveland ‘illegal immigrants’.

The victims, which included a young boy and two women who were shielding children from gunfire, were all from Honduras.
