Democrats have and still do gerrymander, the worst cases (iirc) being in new england. The perverse thing is that while republicans tend to get more extreme when they gerrymander, Democrats tend to devolve to machine politics and end up being more moderate. But I don’t disagree with you in principle; I wish democrats would put up an actual fight.
