I cant find much information about it. Is it possible to create an instance which will be part of a server, like lemmy.ml. Or do I have to run a server to be able to create a sub inside lemmy.ml(or any other). Thanks
You can think of instance and server as the same thing. An instance of lemmy runs on a server.
You don’t have to run an instance to create a community (sub), but I believe some instances limit who can create communities.
If you run your own instance, you could do whatever you please with it. When you create a community on it, other federated instances can browse to it via community@instance.domain
Here are the instructions for hosting your own instance
I’m pretty tech-impaired so I don’t really understand the whole “decentralization” “federate” & Etc. but I saw a new lemmy “with a TTRPG community”; you might’ve seen the recent addition of "r/Accidental Renaissance. But… I can’t sign in to my Lemmy account on there! So what gives?
FYI, this is not a tech support community. You might want to delete this post to save the poor mods from the headache - it looks like they’ve been struggling with this issue lately.
Answer: from the instance you are subscribed to (lemmy.world), search for the relevant community like so:
!community (replace the community and instance with the one you are looking for.)
The community might not come up the first time. If it doesn’t, wait a second and perform the search again. At that point, assuming your instance is federated with the instance you are looking for, you should find the community. Click in. Subscribe. You are done!
I'm told you enter the full URL into the search function, but that doesn't work. Is that normal or an exodus-related issue? I'd like to look at Kbin stuff.
Unfortunately, kbin instances are unavailable via Lemmy right now due to hosting problems on kbin's side of the equation (see Kbin Codeberg #101). This will probably be fixed soon, so keep an eye on that issue for progress.
Even if it were working, however, there's actually something of a required ritual that you'll need to go through when subscribing to an external community which your instance is not already federated to (i.e.: communities where nobody on SDF is currently subscribed). Here are the steps you'll need to follow:
In the community search, paste in the following pattern: !community@instance.domain (e.g.: !technology@beehaw.org)
Press [Enter], wait for the search to finish (it's normal to see no results)
Wait a few minutes
Refresh the search page and search for the common name this time (e.g.: "Technology")
The community should appear and be available for subscription now
FWIW: There are plans to improve this unintuitive workflow in the future (see Lemmy Backend Github #2951).
If these steps don't work, it's possible that the community may simply be too new. You'll sometimes need to wait an hour or so after a community has been created for it to start being available on external instances.
Now that we're on Lemmy, the different categories aren't called "subreddits" anymore. What are they called now? Communities? And is there a way to link them like we used to with an r/ ?
How to create an instance/sub

How to sign in when you see other urls/websites?

[Request] Button for lemmyverse.net or browse.feddit.de to open community in your instance's search page
Adding new communities is a bit of a pain due to having to copy and paste the links into the search page....
Can you add new instances here usually?

how do I link to my community in comments?
