I’ve now put the following text into a Note that I can copy and paste from every time there’s a new takedown notice about one of the violin practice videos I’ve shared on Instagram for

“This is me, playing my own violin (not especially well), playing music that is in the public domain. You don’t own my practice videos and you don’t own Bach!”

I've been thinking about how to work some more piano and flute practice into my regular routine. I came across and have decided to join in. Today is my Day 1.

For flute, I want to get my chops back to perhaps do some busking in the summer (if I can find a location where I currently live that feels safe/comfortable), and more importantly, to perform at my sister's wedding in September!

For piano, I just generally want to play more. I'm thinking of learning some repertoire, and also perhaps working on improvisation, keyboard harmony, sightreading, etc.

Day 4 of . Had to take a few days off of my practice regimen to help deal with a sick partner. However, we're back at it with the viola feeling much better. I worked up to a single take of the first bourée. Lots of things to work on; specifically my next session is going to focus on the length and fullness of the triple-stops.

Can you tell I have spent more time on the violin recently 🙉

Day two of my was less elegant, but kinda fun anyway! I worked on accuracy with large string crossings (specifically ’s number 5). This session started very wild and out of control but towards the end I found a much better balance.

Some bow drift and intonation work left to do but overall I feel like my bow arm is faster and more aligned with my left hand than it was at the beginning of the session! But boy or boy do I need to get rid of that tension in my pinky finger

Ok! Going to try bringing something in from the twitland that my favorite violinist, , started. This is my first . I’ve been playing a lot of viola, but recently one of her pegs started slipping, so here’s my attempt to practice a piece on the ! I worked on Bach’s Bourrée 1 in two parts because it was easy enough to read up a fifth 😅. A little clumsy, and it’s amazing how small the violin feels compared to the viola.

Some things I observed:

  1. My bow arm is all over the place, I need to really focus on and improve my contact point 🫨
  2. The trills in part one are uneven, and I should find a cadence I like and make it consistent across the repeat. 🎼
  3. Just general memorization - recording made me extra anxious and having to double check with the score caused a few more pauses than I’d expected 🎶…🎶
  4. That ending octave needs a whole tuning session to itself 😂

I’m open to other observations too! Happy playing 🎻

Me, white ~30 male in a green shit and green hair tips to match playing the first stanza of Bach Bourrée 1 on the violin.

Gonna try posting regular practice videos again!

Day 1 - Sum (Sorrow) by Mykola Lysenko, a Ukrainian composer of the early 20th c. and an iconic Ukrainian figure. I picked this up just under a year ago, when war broke out in Ukraine, and recently started working on it again.

Slava Ukraini. You deserve peace, happiness and the chance to define a cultural identity on your own terms.
