Qualities that I think make someone fuddy-duddy: conservative extremism, fixed mindset, unwillingness to consider viewpoints of others and easily made uncomfortable when confronted with a professional, serious person who is no longer satisfied with the status quo.

A3. Two main things grind my gears. People who don’t understand a lot of younger hams don’t have space for antennas so it’s very compromise antennas with digital modes or nothing, and the hobby is not great at self promotion. 3 years ago I didn’t see the point of it and why on earth would someone use morse code?

Q5. Have you ever used ham radio equipment to do some radio ? What frequencies were you using? How successful was it?

A5. Somewhere on the internet that I can't find any more, there is or was a station listening for meteors. It used a directional antenna pointed from a receiver in the DC area to a TV transmitter in Ontario. Meteors sound like pings in this configuration.

Does that ring a bell?

Found it!

Big fun during meteor showers.

A6:
I learned morse code in a very round-about way. I don't recall ever actually studying to learn it.
I mostly started listening to repeater IDs before I got my license, matching patterns to letters. Someone eventually explained how numbers and punctuations worked.
I started learning at 20 WPM, so I was kind of shocked when I went to take my 5 WPM code test. Almost failed because it was so slow, and I wasn't expecting that. Elmers kept telling me to slow down.

A3:
I'm not a member of any local clubs here in New York, but I spend an awful lot of time talking with, and helping out with Allstarlink-related stuff for the Sierra Foothills Amateur Radio Club (W6EK) in Auburn, California. To me, they represent what a good amateur radio club should be. Friendly, welcoming, good ambasadors of the hobby, tons of interesting activities, etc.

Q1 I’ve been a ham for about two years. Started with trying to use an RTL-SDR dongle to pickup SSTV from the ISS and was having trouble. Figured the act of getting my licence would point me at some knowledge about antennas and why I couldn’t hear anything
