A plane-polarized light view of a rock thin section under a polarizing microscope. The field of view is about 2mm wide. In the centre of the view is a large greyish crystal, elongated WNW-ESE. One half of the crystal has a pale grey tone, the other half a dark grey tone. The reminder of the view is filled by smaller flaky crystals of muscovite (brilliant rainbow colours) and chlorite respectively (dull greys and violet colours)

I have no strong feelings for today's #MinCup23 match! Sodalite is a tectosilicate which is often used as an ornamental gemstone. Stibnite is a sulphide mineral containing antimony, expands when frozen (just like ice) and looks metal af so I think it gets my vote today

#MineralMonday Andalusite in the chiastolite form (crosses) in schist. From the Littleton formation in Sterling MA. Town next door, Lancaster, has larger crystals.

For #MineralMonday here’s a spirifer brachiopod geode (infilled with calcite) under 365nm ultraviolet light. I love how it’s shaped like a bat, and that the brachidium in cross section looks like a wee heart 🦇🖤 #ScottishFossils

Landscape photo of the same brachiopod taken under normal light. The surrounding matrix is a mudstone which is fine grained and greyish blue in colour. The main cavity of the brachiopod is infilled with tiny white dogtooth calcite, and the brachidium in brown calcite. There is also another small brachiopod above it, and a geode above slightly to the right, and a small orthocone beneath it.
