One locale that few scientists have considered for life is the set of rings that crown Jupiter, outside the gas giant's atmosphere. These rings, like those that circle all of our solar system's gas giants, are actually belts composed mainly of water-ice particles, some as small as grains of sand, others as large as mountains. Might life exist there?
Bill Diamond, president and CEO of the SETI Institute, certainly hopes so.
‘You don’t see politics, boundaries and ethnicities from space,’ he says. ‘Maybe such a discovery would offer us a different perspective on what it’s like to be human.’

Space dot com caught up with Bill Diamond, President and CEO of the SETI Institute for an exclusive, mind-stretching close-encounter discussion regarding the mounting evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Can 'Conversations' with Whales Teach Us to Talk with Aliens? A controversial 20-minute interaction with a humpback whale might help scientists communicate with extraterrestrials and nonhuman Earthlings alike.
The SETI Institute wishes co-founder and Chair Emeritus for SETI Research Dr. Jill Tarter a happy 80th birthday. Happy birthday, Jill! Here’s to many more to come.

The search for alien technosignatures has dramatically expanded, thanks to a new experiment involving an alliance between the SETI Institute, Breakthrough Listen and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).
The new project is called COSMIC ("Commensal Open-Source Multimode Interferometer Cluster") and is in operation at the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) of radio telescopes in New Mexico.
Last call this #GivingTuesday to support the search for life in the cosmos! Imagine discovering that we are not alone in the universe. Your gift can help! Make your gift before midnight here: https://www.seti.org/giving-tuesday-23
Special thanks to our very own Lew Levy, member of the SETI Institute Council of Advisors and Founder of SETI Forward, for his $1,500 gift to our Giving Tuesday campaign!
LaserSETI Update: https://laserseti.net/enclosures-mean-build-time/
Today’s the day when a lot of work streams come together in the Gantt chart: our 10 enclosures have been delivered. That means we can start building instruments, which means we can deploy them, which means more sky coverage and advancing the project!
For the past century, we’ve inadvertently broadcast our presence to an estimated 75 nearby star systems. About a quarter of those stars have confirmed exoplanets orbiting in the habitable zone. But what kind of emissions are seeping into space now? Could extraterrestrials detect our satellite pings around the globe, and could they be listening in on our cellphone conversations?
