The Gameplay Basics: How to Play The goal for all three boards is simple: Get to the other side alive. 1. Choose a challenge board. 2. Choose your piece. Every piece moves differently, which will shape how you play! 3. Set your piece anywhere along the bottom row of your challenge board to begin. 4. Move your piece along the board, filling prompts as you go. Each move you make is a new prompt fill. if you move one space, use that one prompt for your fill. If you move more than one space, combine all the prompts in your path! For example, a Pawn might move one space forward, and use that single prompt for their fill. A Knight however, might move two spaces right, then one forward -- they must take on all three of those prompts in their fill. 5. To Win, get your piece to the other side without getting captured by the enemy.
Threatened Space Basics: How to play Avoid capture-- Don't stop on a Threatened Space! A threatened Space is any space where an enemy piece can capture your piece. If you stop on a Threatened Space, your piece will be captured, and you must start your challenge again with a new piece. (The enemy piece will love to the space where your sacrificed piece was caught!) To avoid stopping on a Threatened Space, combine multiple prompts to move further! To render a threatened Space safe, capture the enemy piece before it captures you...
I’m Not A Chess Person: But I Don't Know How to Play Chess... Great News! You don't need to know Chess to take on Darkcember! We've simply stolen the aesthetics and basic mechanics of how the pieces move, and made up simplified rules for our own deranged amusement. If you'd prefer a simpler prompt challenge, we've made alternate versions of each board without the chess elements, so you can play however you like!

The Rook: A Rook moves horizontally or vertically, as many spaces as it wants, until blocked. It cannot jump over pieces. You can move a rook a single space or multiple spaces for fills, but every time you change directions 90 degrees that is a new turn, and a new fill. The Bishop: A Bishop moves diagonally, as many spaces as it wants, until blocked. It cannot jump over pieces. Each game has a Black & White bishop for each side. You can choose what kind your bishop is, but be aware you will be limited to all-white or all-black prompts. You can move a bishop a single space or multiple spaces for fills, but every time you change directions 90 degrees that is a new turn, & a new fill.
The Knight: A Knight (or Horsey) moves in an L-Shape, three-down and one over, in any direction. It is the only piece that can jump Over other pieces while doing so. While playing with a Knight you would combine all four prompts in any of the L-Shape you chose to move in. The Pawn: The Pawn moves Forward one move at a time, unless it is capturing a piece diagonally. This means you can’t combine prompts! The exception is its very first move, where it can move two spaces at once if it chooses. Once at the end of the board (Victory!) a Pawn becomes a Queen.

Threatened Spaces & Capturing: Rooks & Bishops While you're making your way across the board, watch out! If you end your move in a threatened Space, your piece will be captured, and you'll have to start again with a new piece. As it can move as many spaces as it likes, a Rook threatens any space above, below, or to either side, so long as nothing's in the way. Just like a Rook, a Bishop can move any number of spaces in a straight line, but only diagonally. If you stay off its color you'll be safe!
Threatened Spaces & Capturing: Knights The Knight is a special case. Its moves are limited, but the Knight is the only piece who can leap over obstacles to get to their prey, and who attacks with a twist. A Knight moves in an L shape, traveling three spaces total. they can either move one space, turn 90 degrees, then move two spaces, or travel two spaces, turn, then move one space. This means there are eight spaces a Knight can reach -- but once you get inside a Knight's guard, they're vulnerable. If you stray to close to a Knight, keep your enemy closer! And if you can't? Stay on the same color as the knight: the way they move means they always land on a different color than they started on.
