"Mapps, who is running for mayor and clearly trying to shore up support from all sides, conjures the spirit of the “avid cyclist” strategy. His implicit assumption that the Portland “everyman” is a driver who becomes irate when they see a new bike lane is pessimistic and concerning. Why aren’t people who are overly attached to their cars seen in the same radical light as “bike people”?

I haven't looked at all of the Portland (OR) mayoral candidates yet, but I like what Keith Wilson is laying down.

Petition by to fix Oregon's proposed law.

"As currently written, HB 4103:
...would restrict some of the most affordable styles to [16yo and up]
...[allows localities to] ban the use of certain e-bikes from accessing multi-use paths and trails
...Enforcement based on e-bike class will be highly subjective and confusing for users
...Misses the mark on providing a clear definition... [cargo / 4 wheels, bigger motors]"

The BikePortland podcast is interviewing Portland, Oregon city council candidates. This one with my friend Steph Routh is particularly inspiring.

Portland's NEW multi-member, ranked-choice districts give us a huge opportunity to put people over profits in running the city. Pick a candidate and get involved!

"Gonzalez recently released a melodramatic video claiming he was "accosted" by a female fellow TriMet rider on January 27, who allegedly subjected him to “deliberate, unwanted physical contact” while also having the gall to criticize the public servant over his cruel policies. Unfortunately for him, TriMet video of the incident show he wildly exaggerated those claims, and AT MOST the woman may have brushed Gonzalez’s arm as she passed by"

Portland, Oregon city council district 4: who do you like?

I'll open the bidding with Chad Lykins, who says things like:

"The best way to reduce the carbon impact of transportation is by making it safer to walk, bike and take public transit."

"I will advocate for the construction of shelters that are safe, sanitary, and respect the dignity of the people they serve. This means making reasonable accommodations for pets, cohabitation, and freedom of movement."

Since this will be a ranked choice ("instant runoff") election, we get to rank the candidates.

If you're in East Portland (Oregon), please come out on Friday, January 26, to meet my friend Steph Routh at her campaign kickoff for Portland City Council District 1, East Portland! RSVP here: https://secure.ngpvan.com/DjcIZMsFiEacebOJWPhiqw2

Steph is not running in my district, but I can testify that she has both experience and the right priorities, including improving bike transportation and looking out for Portland's most vulnerable.

Why is it that whenever anyone proposes a new tax in Portland, they also propose a completely new mechanism for collecting it?
