๐๐ถ๐ฃ๐ต๐ญ๐ฆ ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ง๐ต ๐๐ฏ ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ด is a series of paintings created with a robotic pen plotter. The robot follows instructions produced by a generative algorithm that creates a unique output each time it runs. Multiple sine wave oscillation functions, each with differing periods and amplitudes, combine to alter the size and orientation of hundreds of polygons to create a layered organic form.
While working on this series, I thought about all of the hidden topologies that shape our lives; trying to put form to the formless. The curvature of a friendship, the boundaries of desire, the distance between aspirations.

My works are serial in nature. They are the physical manifestations of the generative programs I create. There is a unique partnership, a transference of powers, when bits of information become paint on paper.

The generative algorithm I designed for this series produces curving forms of various complexity. Each form is made up of hundreds of thin lines. When layered atop each other, they produce moirรฉ interference patterns: complex shades and textures, the emergent properties of shape and color, paint and paper.
๐๐ช๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ช๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ is a generative art program that directs a robotic pen plotter to produce layered harmonic waveforms, each built from hundreds of oscillating paint strokes.
When the program is initialized, the properties of each waveform - frequency, amplitude, and phase shift - are randomly selected, resulting in a unique structure each time the program is run. These sixteen paintings are a representative sample of the programโs output and a physical manifestation of the algorithms that power it.

These four paintings are currently available at The Compound Gallery in Emeryville, CA. Each were created with a robotic pen plotter that follows instructions produced by generative algorithms which I designed to mimic organic shapes and behaviors.
As a former biologist turned data scientist, my work considers the similarities between software algorithms that power computation and biochemical algorithms that produce life. An algorithm is, simply put, a set of instructions that produces a desired output. A recipe for biscuits is an algorithm. Your DNA contains algorithms. They arenโt limited to the domain of computer science.
In much the same way, neither is the practice of generative art. At its core, generative art is art that is made with the influence of a non-human system. Kaleidoscopes, Spirograph, and tarot card readings are all examples of generative art that donโt involve computers. I see generative art as the spiritual descendent of conceptual art. We examine the work to better appreciate the instructions which assembled it.
