open source AI models have their work cut out for them. google's i/o conference keynotes in years past were all about Android with machine learning mentioned here and there, search mentioned here and there, and other properties getting honorable mentions. this year's conference keynote it's the exact opposite. it's all AI. Android had a short AI focused presentation for good measure, but that was it. google's narrative shift is clear.

The massive head start and amount of capital that Google has going for them. I want open source models to succeed, but it's going to be a large uphill battle.

User discovery on Nostr is hard. Please shill me 2-3 npubs to follow. These should be profiles you'd recommend to new Nostriches. These should be profiles with "smaller" followings, not larger profiles that most already know and interact with. Don't just tag them. Leave a couple words or a sentence describing why you followed them or recommend them. Thanks!

not everyone understands that having free speech means the good and the bad are both allowed. it's even tough for me to comprehend, so i'm not going to hold it against someone. they'll get it eventually, when they need it most.

It seems the #1 issue with people joining nostr resolves around censorship, but not in the way you'd think. A handful of Redditors said they wouldn't join nostr because nostr has or could have hate speech, pedos, etc. and you couldn't ban or moderate those users.

I get it. 99.999% of humanity doesn't approve of that content and doesn't want to be near that type of content.

I don't know if I have a good enough answer for them though. I told them that with free speech, that means all speech is allowed, which includes the good speech and the bad speech.

If assholes want to have their corner of nostr and hang out with other assholes, then so be it. The other 99.999% of humanity will hang out everywhere else with positivity and good vibes, zapping each other non-stop.

It's no secret that we have a lot of work to do here when it comes to marketing. Nostr clients generally do not have marketing teams and marketing budgets. For the most part, they have a code monkey hammering away at code, and that's it!

That puts the burden of marketing Nostr on all of us and we can all do this in various capacities. This is how a decentralized movement works. No one is in charge and we're all in charge at the same time.

This is what fuels me to speak at Bitcoin and Nostr conferences. It's up to all of us to make Nostr successful, if we truly believe in the protocol, decentralization, and freedom.

However, as Lilith says, we are bad at marketing outside of our niche. I agree here. This is why I had a conversation with my wife last week about trying to find conferences next year that are NOT Bitcoin or Nostr related and submitting to them to attend as a speaker. It's kind of scary, but I am ready. We all are.

There is borderline anime child porn in global. Much is not marked sensitive. This makes us look really bad to new users imo.

I think global feeds should be more of a hidden/advanced feature if we are going to have them at all.

Which we probably shouldn't have either, there are better ways to do discovery...

Thoughts? 🤔

@cf473ebe9736ba689c718de3d5ef38@mostr.pub won't be the only Nostr client to custody keys for users. Even if ZBD plans on allowing users to export their keys at a later date, at some point we will most likely see another Nostr client that won't allow this. They may even clearly state this in their business model. The beauty of Nostr is that it's truly open. That means any client can be built in any shape or fashion that fits their user's needs. The free market will prevail here though, I think. Users will want to try other experiences and advocate for their clients to allow them to do this. And if they don't, those clients may not make it. Freedom and user choice will prevail.

It generally has been. I remember saying back in January that some day we could see Twitter add Nostr support. They'd generate an npub for every user and they'd just be using Nostr and not even know it. They'd custody keys and manage them on the backend. We're actually seeing that scenario now. My bad for putting that out into the ether, I guess. 🤣🤣 But seriously, of Nostr and open and people can do what they want, them a client treating exporting their nsec as a feature should be okay too. Not all clients will be exactly the same. Not all clients will be for everyone.

The "Nostr FUD" that I heard while in Riga came from people that were afraid to put in the work, IMO. The most confusing FUD was from a UX designer that told me Nostr wasn't ready for good UX design yet. Repeatedly. I'm not sure what he meant here. We're still building the tech and to focus on that? We don't have a large enough user base to waste time on it? Either way, I believe that we're at the perfect pivotal point for great UX. We need onboarding and an intuitive UX to entice the next wave of users. If we don't build it, they won't come.
