Had a go at cleaning the kukri last night. Lemon, salt, baking soda, vinegar…

First time it has been used. It’s never been sharpened (by me) and that went through a lemon like it was nothing (sharper than my chef’s knife). @Thornburywitch was right that edge keeps. Will need a few more passes but something tells me it’s a very old blade and it’ll be difficult to get shiny.

Cleaning it did reveal some detail like how they poured a little bronze or whatever in a few bits which is a nice touch.

Ooh super interesting vid. Love how it’s shrouded in so much mystery.

Jeez. Massive house fire a few doors down in kew.

Thing just collapsed in front of us all…

Everyone safe.

Poor cop telling everyone to stay away. Not an easy task when there are 200 people watching on she gave up.

Seems like all the cool kids are on the burger train tonight.

I’m on the pizza train.

Finally found my old Kukri from a trip to Nepal in '99 and this w/e going to try and restore it so it’s shiny and sharp.

Centre of balance is right where the blade starts to curve so about half way. All my chef knives centre is the bolster / heel.

Surprised customs let a kid (was 13 at the time) in with such a devastating weapon.

According to wiki: “traditional custom that the blade must draw blood before being sheathed”.

Instead gonna see how an onion fares:

Sherpa dude who was with us pointed out the good ones so with any luck he was right.

Just moved a bunch of bluestone, same sort of size bricks old houses were built of.

Whoever built those old double story bluestone houses my gawd their backs would be gone. Surely they used some sort of pulley system.

They are HEAVY.

Ooh interesting I hadn’t about the brick hod before. I couldn’t imagine doing that all day every day.

avoiding COVID

Nice! Just stay safe. It’s no laughing matter.

edit: well I’m gonna keep going…

If you’re out at sea, also be careful because seabirds/ H5N1 is no joke either…

Edit 2: also the recent norovirus outbreak on the P&O Ventura is nothing to chuckle about

With the Dim Sims of Uncertainty, so many chillies on the trees still have to do something with them:

Getting a bit sick of going over to the p’s place and half the conversation is about them feeling cold. Tonight was 6 times. Their place is at 23c.

I’ve tried to explain layering with light clothes, doing some light activity a few times a day when they feel it, thermals…

I understand it becomes hard to regulate temp. at that age which is why layering is a good one. Gets a bit hot, take one off… not doing it for you put it back on rinse and repeat.

They’ve been on so many trips to cold places over the years and they’re swimming in warm clothing, but they just… don’t.

It’s like complaining about being rained on when you’re holding an expensive unopened umbrella.

Frustrating.

Got a note from someone around the corner. This is the second one now.

It reads:

“Dear xxx,

I’ve moved into xxx rd. Fran suggested you may have spare lemons Thanks, Caroline.”

I have no idea who these people are…

Now this could turn into a mills & boon plot:

*It was cold, nearing sunset, the beach beckoned. With windswept hair and an unshaven jawline that could possibly cut ice, xxx decided to chance it. “Who is this mystery lady”? “Why do they all want my lemons”?

Questions that needed answers.

xxx carefully selects the best lemons, blemish free… “what if she’s the one” he wonders as he approaches.

He gets to the door… heart racing.

Not a moment too soon the door swings open to reveal a scantily clad siren with perfect dimensions…

“uhh, hi, I heard you were after lemons” xxx awkwardly mutters, trying to maintain eye contact.

“oh is that for me” she says gently.

“uhh, yeah…” and before xxx could pull out the note the she puts her finger on her bottom lip, looking him up and down lowering her voice to a whisper…

“oh not the lemons…”

Realising what’s happening, xxx drops the bag of lemons then spends 2 minutes picking them up.*

Sort of put my foot in it tonight. Headed down the bellarine to p’s place. Their stove top has stopped sparking. Mum’s frustration was real.

Anyway said their ancestors a few 100k years ago would be upset because at least they could light a fire.

had that lined up for a few hours and it didn’t go down as well as expected.

Since the cold swims the last few years at this time of year have been very confusing body-wise.

It’s getting to the in between temp where the brown fat activates and deactivates on and off. So you actually feel colder if it warms up a bit but when the temp drops it kicks back in.

It’s interesting stuff:

my.clevelandclinic.org/health/…/24015-brown-fat

In that article it talks about needing to be cold a few times a week, but I’ve found it still works weeks / months between cold swims.

Also in light of being told just the other day about whatever genetic problem I might have relating to high cholesterol decided to go down the rabbit hole and it turns out brown fat reduces hypercholesterolaemia.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25754609/

So there you go. Something that started out as something ‘fun’ to do turns out it’s a big area of research, and might even prolong my time on this god-forsaken rock and I never would’ve known otherwise.

Old man just informed me yesterday he has a hereditary gene defect related to PCSK9 or Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 which means high cholesterol or sumfink.

I already had my parma and chips lined up…

So rude.

Fucking neighbour is doing my head in. This is the guy that cuts his lawn with hand shears and also known to sweep leaves around the block 300+m away.

This morning got yelled at for not cleaning up leaves on my side of the boundary. It’s fukin autumn find a new less stressful hobby.

Then he apologises later saying I caught him at a bad time.

Dude seriously has his moments and I respect that but not leaves… in… autumn.
