I remember them telling us covid was low risk, that it would be contained, and not to panic.

I agree a lot public health management really fucked up in a big way, and we could have handled even the initial response a lot better. But in their defense, these statements had been true of every other overblown novel contagion in the past century. In the past couple decades there have been a few diseases which were touted as the new global pandemic and they came to very little (on the grand scale, not saying they weren’t serious for the people who suffered them). I also agree the mask shit was totally mishandled.

I think it’s impractical to call for a full-blown reaction to every new disease out there. Unfortunately then reacting to stuff when it does become big will take at least some time.

Personally wouldn’t currently advise anyone to “prepare” for it in any way beyond how they should already be as standard - Just always have a few days worth of canned food, supplies and masks.

Honestly, best of luck and it would be amazing if you succeeded. Sadly I think actively supporting this requires a lot more faith in electoralism than I have.

I accepted after the Corbyn era that neither the Labour party nor the media care to actually hold politicians they like responsible for anything, including popular demand. Get 100k signatures and you’ll get what you always get, a lame excuse and then you’ll be ignored. Or even if Starmer came out today and said “Lying is okay”, would that stop a Labour win? I doubt it.

It’s already been proven that piracy is a causal factor in more sales. Any self-interested dev should be promoting piracy of their game.

Windows -> Fedora

Been almost 10 years and no thoughts of changing. What can I say? I lucked out first time.

NASA helped write a paper about the possible outcomes of extraterrestrial contact back in 2011 - Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis - arXiv (arxiv.org)

This is just a short, easy-to-read paper I keep in my bookmarks and go back to occasionally. It explores, qualitatively, the various outcomes that contact with alien intelligence might have. I think it’s a really cool 25-page exploration of possibilities that are fun to think about. Some choice quotes:...

Event as a then leftist, I used to be skeptical of this rhetoric until I saw every single establishment come out the woodwork to smear Jeremy Cromblin for being the minorest of threats to bourgeois power.

Major newspapers with front page news 100% seriously accusing him of being a soviet sleeper agent, the head of the armed forces (who is legally obliged to be impartial) went on the BBC news to specifically criticise Corbyn and talk about how he’ll let everyone die to nukes, the notorious BBC moment of portraying him outside the Kremlin in a Ushanka like he’s V fucking Lenin himself, not a single major media outlet accurately reported on how the antisemitism report entirely cleared Corbyn, or how the chief UK rabbi fueling the smears is literally a childhood friend of bojo .

I dunno, I could go on forever with examples - But that year I truly lost all hope in electoralism, and truly appreciated the bourgeois hold on fucking everything. I saw the machine come out in full force and it was scary. bear-despair

William Osman comes to my mind for this one. He used to do fun, cute projects, but slowly got increasingly “edgier” and clickbaity.

After he did a 10 minute dive on how he stalked, catfished, harassed, and doxxed (never mind fraudulently getting a signature on legal documents from) this guy for calling him a “loser”, I was just left thinking “what the fuck kind of ass are you now”.

The child shouldn’t be standing so close, it’s already sending images of her to Tesla HQ, and is liable to burst into flames any moment.

Dwarf Fortress devs themselves effectively defied capitalism and the game was simply donationware for the first 20 years of game development. Always respect when devs are able to do that and commit to it.

The official graphical versions now actually cost money on Steam, but they still release the underlying game for free (and plenty of free graphic mods out there if ASCII isn’t modern-graphics enough for you).

Biden plans to send $1bn arms shipment to Israel (www.bbc.com)

spoilerThe White House has told Congress it wants to send more than $1bn (£800m) in new weapons to Israel. This comes despite the US being opposed to a full-scale invasion by the Israeli military on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. It said last week it had paused a shipment of bombs to Israel over concerns civilians would be...

I usually think bot accusations get thrown around quite carelessly. But there was a “tankie”-bashing reddit post pointed out on here a couple weeks back, and the account was so clearly, objectively a bot (mass posts, all anti-communist, almost all spouting ‘tankie’, comments very rarely related to the post at all, seemed to respond based on keywords, largely targeted subs that talked about ‘maps’, account was deleted straight after getting called out), that I’ve started to wonder.

It clearly must happen to some degree. I don’t see why else that bot existed. But the real quantity is probably impossible to estimate nowadays.

These movies show the conflict, to some degree or another, from the side of the oppressed. As soon as a movie shows the chosen race + ethnicity of people living in relative okay conditions due to benefiting from said fascism, people often side with the empire.

Starship Troopers being an obvious example.

This feels like a very sudden gutteral reaction to very recent events. We generally get on well with dbzero as an instance, even if the mods are lib-brained.

The only download software I used was the DownThemAll Firefox extension, which has always been real good. It works on all sites I’ve tried it with, it’s a very customisable interface, I don’t really know what you mean by not copy-pasting links but you don’t gotta do that.

You’re not likely to find an exact copy of the software for another OS, wine probably is your best bet if you just want IDM in Linux form.

We already had all this scaremongering about Trump the first time round, and it didn’t happen. So yes, it’s already been memory holed once, and is now equally believed again. The loop shall continue.

This is all just post-hoc rationalization. .world defederated from us before we were federated with effectively anybody at all, then they get a bunch of very weak screenshots to say “look they’re all meanies”, as if you couldn’t get the same weak-ass verbiage from any instance.

EDIT: Oooh, there’s room for a rebuttal. Can a siteadmin go over there and claim hexbear.net. Then we can have a thread vote on precisely how to rebut with something equally unserious.

This seems a silly post for dunk tank. It’s a funny jokey observation but I don’t see how it’s any kind of indictment of PointCrow. Beside them being full streams and lengths vary for wild reasons, I personally could name 100 pokemon faster than I could name even 50 people, and I don’t really like pokemon that much - I just don’t know famous names and have limited friends and family.

In Europe, these blocks are typically just IP bans, so secure DNS no helpy. You need a VPN or other proxy.
