‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

Carlo,

(but we haven’t made any videogames about it)

I tried to find one, but it looks like you’re right. This is the closest I could find, and they seem to be based in Paris.

Carlo,

Thanks, I had to bust out the decoder for the Klingon script. Google Translate support for Klingon when?

Carlo,

For a minute I thought the Meme-Makers Guild had joined SAG-AFTRA and the WGA in solidarity.

Carlo,

Yeah, I had the same experience with longswords.

Carlo,

A telepath? Definitely not. But an empath, like Troi? Sure! She just gets impressions of emotions; it’s not as if she can hear your internal monologue.

Carlo,

Yeah, I keep seeing articles about shows delayed by the strike that I hadn’t the foggiest clue existed, and never would have watched anyway.

Carlo,

Looks like somebody yarn-bombed the saucer section, and Guinan couldn’t resist making a fetching hat out of it.

Carlo,

That sounds awful, I’m sorry you had that experience. I highly recommend startrek.website; it’s been a really positive place for discussions so far, relative to r/startrek.

Dogs kill more humans than any other non-human vertebrate in the world by a very long shot

I looked into this, based on some other comments. Turns out it’s snakes. Various sources list dogs at between 13,000 and 35,000 deaths per year, and snakes in a range of 75,000-100,000.

Edit: but if we’re talking one species, dogs might edge out the deadliest snake. Really hard to say, based on the data I was able to find.

Thousands sign up to experience magic mushrooms as Oregon’s novel psilocybin experiment takes off (apnews.com)

Psilocybin tea, wind chimes and a tie-dye mattress await those coming to an office suite in Eugene to trip on magic mushrooms. For roughly six hours, adults over 21 can experience what many users describe as vivid geometric shapes, a loss of identity and a oneness with the universe....

Carlo,

I didn’t really experience any effects the first half-dozen or so times I ate mushrooms. Turned out I just needed a really big dose. I was on SSRI’s for some of those early attempts, but not all of them. Obviously these weren’t exactly clinical trials, and I suspect the quality of mushrooms varied considerably. Once I finally managed to get enough of them in my system, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signs law restricting release of her travel, security records (apnews.com)

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a law Thursday restricting release of her travel and security records after the Legislature wrapped up a special session marked by a fight to more broadly scale back the state Freedom of Information Act....

Carlo,

This was also my exact reaction to seeing this. Like, holy shit Arkansas, my expectations were super low, but you managed to limbo under that bar with room to spare.

Carlo,

The most frustrating part about not being influenced by propaganda is that pro-Russia and pro-Ukraine people that have been susceptible to propaganda will attack you from both directions at the same time. Regardless of the topic/issue, this seems to be a good indicator that you’re closely aligned to fact rather than story.

Hi! I downvoted you because this paragraph is incredibly misguided. Firstly, you come right out and claim that you aren’t influenced by propaganda, which is a ludicrous thing to think—especially in the context of this post. Secondly, you make the classic enlightened centrist argument that if everyone thinks you’re wrong, you must have things figured out. That’s a fundamentally stupid position. Have a good one!

Carlo,

See, the problem is—at least with some games, BG3 being the most recent example for me—that there are relatively few clear upgrades. Most of the time it’s a judgment call, and you’re trading one ability for another that you think will be useful more often. In those situations, I usually feel like I should hold onto the old gear, in case I end up wanting it again. So I end up carting around a fair bit of stuff, especially since I feel compelled to open every damn container in the game.

Carlo,

I killed the Nightsong, and was able to persuade most of the Sharrans in the temple to join me; only had to fight Viconia and a handful of supporters. Shar tells Shadowheart to kill her parents to cement her loyalty, after which she will take away her memory of doing it.

Carlo,

I’d say it’s about on par, in that the (bad guy) endings both feel kind of unsatisfying, largely because you don’t get a chance to enjoy any of the power you’ve nominally seized. Obviously there are plot reasons for this, but it ends up making the victories feel a bit hollow.

I don’t know if Larian ever had plans to implement class-based stronghold quests à la BG2, but some of the origin character quest lines seem well suited for it. If I had my druthers, there’d be ways for players to take over and run places like the Emerald Grove, House of Grief, maybe the Circus of the Last Days. Could be good expansion fodder, but I haven’t read anything yet about whether they’re working on one.

Carlo,

Yeah, I see lots of people using it to refer to literally anyone older than themselves.

Carlo,

Can relate. It’s crazy-making the way so many people link some bullshit YouTube video as if it were a credible source for anything.

Carlo,

Not only is it ok to say 'Hey, I was wrong," people will actually give you a lot of credit for being willing to say that. It’s not a sign of weakness; quite the opposite. If you’re never willing to admit to being wrong, you’ll never grow as a person .

Carlo,

This is why I don’t watch Tom Cruise, Elisabeth Moss, et al vehicles. You can’t separate the art from the artist when you’re literally financing their criminal organization.

Carlo,

Nah, all your man-portable shoulder-fired rocket launchers are recoilless; they’re designed to eject gases out the back when you fire, so you don’t have to absorb the momentum. You just want to avoid the backblast area.

Carlo,

I think most online atheist communities would upvote that sort of thing. In my experience, it’s all just circle-jerking about how evil religion is, and how stupid people must be to subscribe to it. Which is understandable; most atheists are constantly inundated with religious claptrap from all kinds of sources, and need a place to vent about it. They don’t tend to be very positive places, though.
