🚨THREAD ALERT🚨

Ahoy! Tonight I’ll be boarding my parents’ Dana 24 sailboat for a trip at sea.

We’re casting off from Haverstraw, NY, which is roughly 25 miles upriver from the northern tip of Manhattan. Our trip will take us down the Hudson River, around the lower end of Manhattan, up the East River, and out to the Long Island Sound. At that point, my goal is New London, CT where I’ll catch an Amtrak back to NYC. My parents plan to continue on to Block Island after that.

Here’s a shot of the galley.

The stove has two burners and the oven is surprisingly good! The whole unit is gimbaled, so it’s entirely possible to cook while the seas are rocky.

My step-mom has been whipping up delicious meal after delicious meal. It may be cramped quarters, but the kitchen is totally capable of excellence.

Some interior shots of Pelagic — including one of the captain plotting our course.

The designers of the Dana 24 made use of every bit of space. There are cabinets, shelves, and hidey-holes everywhere you look. It’s like a Chrysler Pacifica on steroids.

When you un-snap the side cushions from the interior benches, they end up being plenty long for me to sleep. I even had some extra room by my feet. That being said, I opted for sleeping under the stars for two out of three nights.

I made the Pacifica comparison, but Pelagic feels like a cross between a grand tourer and a vanlife-van.

Pelagic has a 16(!) horsepower 2-cyl inbboard Diesel engine, dubbed Herr Diesel, which is connected to a three-bladed prop that will really get this 9,000lb ship cooking through the water.

Whoever optioned this ship from the factory checked nearly every box on the list. There’s beautiful custom woodwork & hardware everywhere. A surveyor said this boat would cost about $300K if built today.

And just like that, I'm back on Long Island! What a trip -- four days and four nights. My dad estimates that we traveled about 175mi in total. Not bad for a 24ft sailboat.

Yesterday I took an Amtrak from New London, CT down to NYC. I got lucky and caught an LIRR train in Penn Station just moments before it left.

My parents spent yesterday sailing to Block Island and after a couple days of exploring they'll head north towards Maine. Looking forward to hearing about their journey.

@dan
Incredibly accurate. Some of those houses were unbelievable. We were wondering how many other houses the owners must have…

The New London marina that we tied up to was just a stone's throw from a hugely important historical landmark: The location at which The Amistad was towed to.

Infamously, New London is known to history as being a hub for slavery. Nowadays the city displays many plaques like these to educate about its dark past.
