My partner Jayden is still on Twitter because of BlackTwitter™️. She just got rate limited for the day because she doesn’t pay for a “verified” account.

What’d that do? Caused her to load up Instagram during the time she’d be normally scroll through Twitter. She doesn’t even use IG that much. Now she’s seeing Meta’s ads instead of Twitter’s. Great business decision.

🚨THREAD ALERT🚨

Ahoy! Tonight I’ll be boarding my parents’ Dana 24 sailboat for a trip at sea.

We’re casting off from Haverstraw, NY, which is roughly 25 miles upriver from the northern tip of Manhattan. Our trip will take us down the Hudson River, around the lower end of Manhattan, up the East River, and out to the Long Island Sound. At that point, my goal is New London, CT where I’ll catch an Amtrak back to NYC. My parents plan to continue on to Block Island after that.

According to my approximations, we have about 40 miles to travel today. The wind maps suggest that we’ll be motoring for the first part of the day, but we’ll get the sails hoisted before too long.

Another day of beautiful weather ahead of us.

Can’t believe how lucky we’ve gotten on this trip. I suppose that the initial delay in casting off from NY was a blessing in disguise. Not only did I end up with a lovely sailing trip, but I got to spend a couple days at my parents’ Delaware River house.

@dan
Incredibly accurate. Some of those houses were unbelievable. We were wondering how many other houses the owners must have…

The New London marina that we tied up to was just a stone's throw from a hugely important historical landmark: The location at which The Amistad was towed to.

Infamously, New London is known to history as being a hub for slavery. Nowadays the city displays many plaques like these to educate about its dark past.

We’re currently in the middle of Long Island Sound and coming up on Bridgeport, CT.

We’ve decided to scrap the non-stop sail plan for a more leisurely pace since we all have the time. No complains here.

Currently heading towards Milford, CT, where we’ll stay at a dock for the night.

This pic is a view of Caumsett State Park through a porthole. I’ve spent many hours hanging out on top of those clay bluffs.

I steered us while my dad was out on the bow letting down the anchor and shouting back instructions. Anchoring at night is new to me, but dad’s a pro so we had no trouble.

The boat can sleep four inside plus two outside. I opted for under the stars (and clouds) since it was juuust warm enough to still be comfortable.

Now I’m wondering how to make coffee without waking up the parental units mere feet away…

Good morning! Today’s day three at sea.

We arrived in Milford, CT at 5pm yesterday, which meant we put in a full eight hour day on the water. I was sailing for a good chunk of it and I felt exhausted when I hit the hay.

The sailing conditions were excellent! We had as much as 8 or 10kts of wind blowing in our favor. I had the boat heeling over 20° for a while and even up to 30° a few times.

Today’s goal is less ambitious: We’re cleaning and then taking a short-ish trip to the Thimble Islands.

Some interior shots of Pelagic — including one of the captain plotting our course.

Here’s a shot of the galley.

The stove has two burners and the oven is surprisingly good! The whole unit is gimbaled, so it’s entirely possible to cook while the seas are rocky.

My step-mom has been whipping up delicious meal after delicious meal. It may be cramped quarters, but the kitchen is totally capable of excellence.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

The designers of the Dana 24 made use of every bit of space. There are cabinets, shelves, and hidey-holes everywhere you look. It’s like a Chrysler Pacifica on steroids.

When you un-snap the side cushions from the interior benches, they end up being plenty long for me to sleep. I even had some extra room by my feet. That being said, I opted for sleeping under the stars for two out of three nights.

Dylan,
@Dylan@weird.autos avatar

I made the Pacifica comparison, but Pelagic feels like a cross between a grand tourer and a vanlife-van.

Pelagic has a 16(!) horsepower 2-cyl inbboard Diesel engine, dubbed Herr Diesel, which is connected to a three-bladed prop that will really get this 9,000lb ship cooking through the water.

Whoever optioned this ship from the factory checked nearly every box on the list. There’s beautiful custom woodwork & hardware everywhere. A surveyor said this boat would cost about $300K if built today.

And just like that, I'm back on Long Island! What a trip -- four days and four nights. My dad estimates that we traveled about 175mi in total. Not bad for a 24ft sailboat.

Yesterday I took an Amtrak from New London, CT down to NYC. I got lucky and caught an LIRR train in Penn Station just moments before it left.

My parents spent yesterday sailing to Block Island and after a couple days of exploring they'll head north towards Maine. Looking forward to hearing about their journey.

Good morning all!

My dad took a nap for a couple hours while I steered us down the Hudson. By the time we reached The Battery he was well-rested. Good thing too because I napped through most of the East River and Hell Gate. This boat stuff’s tiring. I ended up waking as we entered the Long Island Sound.

The three of us were pretty beat and decided it was best to drop anchor for the night. We pulled into my “home port” of Sea Cliff and hunkered down for the evening.

Good morning from the Thimble Islands off the shores of Connecticut!

We’ve got another long day ahead of us. Today we head for New London, CT, which will most likely be my final stop on this trip. There’s an Amtrak station next to the marina that’ll take me right back to NYC.

My parents plan to continue north until they reach Maine, at which point they will have sailed to every state on the east coast. Pretty big accomplishment for them.

We’re heading south down the Hudson River! Coming up on the Cuomo Bridge in the next hour-ish.

We’re planning to sleep in shifts and sail non-stop, weather providing.
