From TFA:

their advanced decay made it impossible to determine the cause of death

Even if the exact cause is not known, I’m pretty sure they died of a bad case of WW2.

The only problem with that theory is, they didn’t even open my box. I know that because the box still had the tape I closed it shut with. So they couldn’t know I had replaced the cord.

Besides, it wasn’t a shitty splice: I actually opened it and replaced the whole cord. You could never tell it wasn’t the original thing.

ExtremeDullard,
@ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Plus, they very likely can’t sell electrical equipment that has had its cord chopped up and repaired

I did it proper. You couldn’t tell the cord had been replaced. For the rest, yeah I know what you mean. That doesn’t mean it’s not crazy that the Red Cross should refuse free shit. My Dad lived through the war and the food restrictions, and let me tell you, he would have been outraged.

Next time, find a friend with small feet who would like to take it off your hands.

The funny thing is, I’m a clear foot taller than my wife, but my own feet have been shortened surgically a few years ago and are now shorter than hers, and I fit inside the machine just fine. But I didn’t want the machine because I hate foot massages 🙂

With a scalpel and a bone saw - at least that’s what the surgeon said - and because sometimes people are born with issues that need fixing later in life.

Three of the countries forced to be in a union for 69 years take measures to avoid being attacked by the country that forced them into that union after seeing it attack a 4th country that was also forced into that union. Gee, I wonder why they’re hostile…

Corruption is apolitical. The guy isn’t a bad democrat, he’s a bad public servant.

The less Google can figure out who you are accurately, the longer the ReCAPTCHAs get. For instance, if you run Librewolf with Resist FingerPrinting, you’re going to eat a metric shit-ton of buses, stairs, bicycles and fire hydrants.

Captchas are maddening, they’re forced labor and there’s a special place in hell for whoever invented them, deploy then and maintain them. However, you should take comfort in the fact that if you have a really hard time getting past a particularly stubborn ReCAPTCHA, it means Google has a harder time tracking you.

The problem isn’t suddenly allowing third party browsers.

The problem here - the ONLY problem - is using a fucking browser to do everything, instead of… you know, browsing.

An app store app should be installed as an app. It has no business being specially handled by a browser.

That’s what you get when you turn browsers into mini operating systems: the thing’s attack surface increases by orders of magnitude.

The only smart thing to say to police is nothing at all: keep quiet.

I’m all for staying here on Lemmy: Lemmings are nicer than Redditors and the place is a lot higher S/N ratio.

But… sadly, due to inertia, Reddit is still where a lot of stuff is squarely at. There are long-established Reddit communities - often nice, well behaved communities - that don’t give a toss about the Reddit drama, and are simply not interested in moving out.

I’ve been trying to kickstart an equivalent Reddit community here on Lemmy for almost a year. While there’s a handful of members, it’s basically just me infrequently posting in it. The original one on Reddit has almost 10K members, is fairly active, and clearly none of the members know anything about Lemmy - much less want to create an account and join my insignificant equivalent community. I keep it around in case Reddit enshittifies to such an extent that even those who don’t care start taking notice. But at the moment, inertia is much too strong.

Strange because the first thing I see when I open my profile in a private window is that single community I moderate.

It’s nice of you to want to help but it’s the kind of community you typically join only when you’re unlucky enough to be concerned 🙂

We have zero insight into the longevity of flash memory because it doesn’t matter: whatever it is, it’s a lot longer than the phone’s planned obscolescence.

That’s why you’ve never heard anybody complain about their saved data getting corrupted: their device has long since hit the landfill before that happens.

Is it just me or Rob Braxman has lost it lately?

I’ve never been super-impressed by Rob Braxman. I mean he’s never truly wrong in what he was saying in his Youtube videos, but his explanations are over-simplistic, a bit of a shortcut (but fair enough to reach a wide audience I guess), and mostly designed to sell his meh deGoogled cellphones and equally meh privacy...

Most everybody in the UK didn’t want to leave Europe until a bunch of politicians with an agenda planted the idea in their mind and argued for it with lies after lies.

The people was lied to and Brexit was manufactured. You can’t put all the blame on the people: part of it is to be dished out to the education system that failed to give enough of them critical thinking abilities and teach them history so it doesn’t repeat itself.

Ok and if you don’t trust anyone, you don’t have any protection at all.

Correct. I assume I don’t, so I’m always super-careful not to give away any information I don’t need to give to begin with. Or I give fake information whenever possible, to pollute the well. For the rest, as the old saying goes, if it’s on the internet, it’s as good as public.

They are never American.

Agreed. If you have to trust a company with your privacy in any way, don’t use an American company. It’s not even their fault: they operate in a country that’s fundamentally dangerous for your privacy.

My email provider is in Norway. for instance.

Actually I use Freetube with sponsorblock on the desktop and Newpipe with sponsorblock on Android. So I mostly don’t see shitty sponsors anymore.

But my Formuler TV box - which runs Android - has some weird crashing problem with the default Newpipe player, so I have to use an external player (MX Player) which doesn’t have sponsorblock, sadly.

So whenever I want to watch Youtube videos on my TV, I have to eat some NordVPN shilling - at least a little bit, just time for me to grab the remote and skip it - and I’m too cheap to replace the TV box.

SmartTube works very well. The problem is, it requires a Youtube account to have subscriptions, playlists and the like. That’s a hard no for me.

Lemmy is far from perfect, and I’m 100% certain it’s going to become completely terrible as soon as a critical mass of the morons currently haunting Reddit transition over. But for the moment, it’s refreshing, the signal/noise ratio is still high, and it doesn’t feel like you’re being exploited for your data and advertised to all the time.

ExtremeDullard, (edited )
@ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I don’t know about that.

I’ve been hearing society is bad and getting worse from a variety of people since I was born in the height of the Cold War, and I’ve come to believe it’s only a perception. It’s no better or worse than it’s ever been: it’s just that as people get older and the standards of their youth change, they feel alienated by a world that is increasinbly not theirs anymore.

I’m old enough to be a grumpy old man but I keep reminding myself that this isn’t my world anymore either. And if I’m honest, I don’t see how the world of today is significantly worse than when I was a kid and we were all preparing for nuclear armageddon any minute now. And I always remind myself how my grandparents and my parents constantly told me to stop listening to “degenerate n*ger music” and quit wasting my time with those damn computer things and pursue more “manly” endeavors. I don’t want to become bitter like they were because I have no real reason to: the world of today really hasn’t done anything to me, it just feels weird.

However, I will say this: social media brings the worst out of people. It’s like reality TV of the 80’s and Usenet, but turbocharged. I think the utter social mediocrity that is social media contributes a lot to the perception that society is worse: it isn’t, it’s just that the worst of it is a lot more visible and more vocal.

You’re right.

Actually I was looking into getting one of the early models - perhaps even a plug-in hybrid - that wasn’t yet equipped with all the surveillance gear and internet connectivity I dread, and having it refurbished. Even if the original range was, say, 120 miles and it only gets half of that because the battery is worn out, and half of that again because I live in a cold climate, I still get 30 miles in the winter and that’s enough for me because the most I would drive is 20 miles between charges - basically for commuting.
