Even simpler: don’t do Discord.

I was invited to some Discord chatroom once: when I hit the website, the list of blocked scripts in uBlock Origin was longer than my arm. That was all I needed to close the tab immediately. I don’t need to run 500 trackers from sketchy advertisement companies to join a glorified IRC chatroom with enough emojis and color to put an epilepsy sufferer in danger.

You mean they don’t get their $0.55 check in the mail when some lawyer successfully sues a company on their behalf and walks out with $50M?

Try uBlock Origin in hard mode. You’ll see how much garbage needs blocking that you don’t see in easy or medium mode.

I’ll tell you what it highlights: giant companies like Google, Microsoft and all the others making billions using free software a few dudes maintain for them for free on their own time. Instead of speaking of the vulnerability of open source software, the profiteers should pay them to ensure they have the time and resources to secure their supply chain.

Absolutely! If you’re doing it to learn something, by all means compile your own kernel. Every Linux user should do that at least once in my opinion. But once the learning is done, the novelty wears off fast and it just becomes tedious.
