FaceDeer

@FaceDeer@fedia.io

Basically a deer with a human face. Despite probably being some sort of magical nature spirit, his interests are primarily in technology and politics and science fiction.

Spent many years on Reddit and then some time on kbin.social.

I'm failing to see what's wrong about this. They used XMPP and then stopped? That seems to be exactly what people angry about Threads federation want Meta to do with ActivityPub.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Oh? I missed where Meta had done bad things to previous Fediverses.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Haven't done anything to the Fedivese yet.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Not Meta.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Done. No change in my position. In what way do you think that thunderstorms (a weather phenomenon caused by atmospheric conditions) and tsunamis (a wave caused by an earthquake or large underwater landslide) are related?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

KenM, is that you?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

You realize that thunderstorms are unrelated to tsunamis?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Even before the latest surge in AI capabilities image recognition was already better than human at distinguishing between gun and non-gun. I think it'll be a net positive. I'm looking forward to the humanoid police robots that can just run up to someone and grab their gun away, ignoring being shot at in the process.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

You only mentioned OpenAI. That's one.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Plenty of non-capitalist organizations also seek to grow.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Users "owning" their content in that way would be the instant death of the Fediverse. If anyone can put whatever nonsense license terms they want on each individual comment or post, how could that chaos possibly be federated?

A better approach would be to recognize that if you're posting your words up on a giant billboard you're not going to be able to control who sees them.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

But without capslock how do you be angry?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Presumably you can't use their branding.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

That's even more "wrong," though. Plenty of AI is deterministic, and plenty of nondeterministic computing isn't AI.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

You're providing a prime example of misunderstanding. The term AI has been in professional use for a wide variety of algorithms, including machine learning and neural nets like LLMs, since the Dartmouth conference in 1956. It's the people who only know what AI is like from Star Trek and other such sources that are misinformed.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

I don't know what you mean by "historical", because the stuff we've got now is what is historically known as AI.

If you mean the Star Trek stuff, though, then the specific terms for those are AGI (Artificial General Intelligence, an AI that's capable of doing basically everything a human can) and ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence, an AI that's capable of doing more than what a human can).

We don't have AGI yet, but there's no reason to assume we can't eventually figure it out. Brains are made of matter, so by fiddling with bits of matter we should eventually be able to make it do whatever a brain can. We have an example showing what's possible, we just need to figure out how to make one of our own.

ASI is a little more speculative since we don't have any known examples of naturally-occurring superintelligence. But I also think it's a bit unlikely that humans just happen to be the smartest things that can exist.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

I have provided them.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

I don't see what this has to do with the meaning of the term AI.

If a marketing department somewhere starts trying to push the slogan "ice cream for your car!" As a way to sell gasoline, would it make sense to start complaining that the stuff Ben & Jerry's is selling isn't actually gasoline?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

The ship's computer could whip up an AGI (Moriarty) in response to a simple command. The Federation later systematized this in the form of emergency holographic officers.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Your laughter is misplaced. Synthetic data is a serious solution, and when it's done right it can give better results than raw "real" data alone.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Given that I have locally-run AIs sitting on my home computer that I have no plan to delete (until something better comes along), then yeah, it's never going to get worse. If all else fails I can just use the existing AI for as long as I want. It doesn't "wear out."

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Computers are general-purpose machines. You can run a computer program on any computer, it may just be faster or slower depending on the computer's capabilities.

The AIs I run locally are also open-source, so if future computers lose compatibility with existing programs they can be recompiled for the new architecture.

I suppose we could lose the ability to build computers entirely, but that strikes me as a much bigger and more general issue than just this AI thing.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Stupid data can be useful for training as a negative example. Image generators use negative prompts to good effect.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

If I want something other than Star Trek then I will watch something other than Star Trek.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

fedia.io is running mbin, which is a fork of kbin. It seems to be doing well, so you could switch to Lemmy/mbin if you don't want to include kbin any more but still want to show alternate clients are possible.
