The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

What is this even? Batteries for UPS in a datacenter wouldn’t be a patch on even a few days of production of EVs, water isn’t being shipped from “drier parts of the world” to cool datacenters, and even if it were, it’s not gone forever once it’s used to cool server rooms.

Absolutely, AI and crypto are a blight on the energy usage of the world and that needs to be addressed, but things like above just detract from the real problem.

If they caught the fuckers that did that, I hope they go away for attempted murder.

I predict skyrocketing sales of beef jerky. And not that namby-pamby gas station shit that you can bite off with your incisors, the real stuff that you have to chew for 2 hours to soften enough to swallow.

Oh, bullshit. They were fine before the Fiat takeover.

I have 500k on a 98 GC 5.9L and 350k on the wife’s 98 4.0L. I doubt they’ve been down for 5 days total in this millenium and both are driven every day.

Two HDMI? AFAIK, there’s no such thing as an HDMI hub for having 2 external monitors.

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

You have a laptop in mind that has two HDMI ports?

I definitely think he should. Maybe he can recruit a few more billionaires to prove that it was just a freak accident.

I would like to recommend my e-book, “How to build a totally safe paper-mache deepsea submersible” available on Amazon for free.

Ah, feel that dopamine hit as you self-righteously chastise someone on the internet in your performative pearl-clutching routine.

You’re welcome.

A classic.

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

So, where did I wish death on them in my statement? I expressed the idea that he and other billionaires should show the world how it’s done properly, and my willingness to assist them in this endeavour (for free even!), such assistance they may or may not want to accept.

I think you have a deep, ugly core that sees things that aren’t there, based on your own feelings towards these people, and projects those dark thoughts into the things you read, causing you to lash out at innocent strangers on the internet.

You should really do some self-examination at the evil inside you, perhaps some therapy would help. I hope the best for you, good luck!

perfume, cologne, and even shampoo that westerners wear to be intolerable

Apparently I’m secretly Japanese because I am so fucking tired of every product I use increasing their scents to intolerable levels.

Irish Spring and Pert have gotten to stupid levels of scent, and trying to find scentless soaps and shampoos is really tough now.

The back of cereal boxes. Worked for me, I can order Cheerios in half the known world.

Have you ever bough an external hardrive only to take the disk out of it?

Hiya, so am looking to buy more storage and while browsing am seeing some external harddisks, such as Western Digital My Book and Seagate Expansion Desktop for cheaper than the internal harddisks themselves. Have seen this one video from KTZ Systems where he bought up multiple of these external ones just to open them up and use...

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Shucked drives are usually the drives that are rejected for internal use because of quality issues. They might work fine, they might not. Be careful with them and remember, RAID is not a backup.

On a cow-calf operation, which is where most beef production starts, a typical cow will graze and/or eat hay for about 12 years while breeding, then get slaughtered pretty much the day they’re shipped because they aren’t worth fattening at that age, they’re just going to ground beef.

The culls (mid-life cows, failed to get pregnant) might see a couple months of their at least 36 month existence on grain before slaughter. Older ones might just go straight to slaughter.

Steers and cull heifers (which is most of what gets used for choice cuts like steak) typically see about 14 months typically on pasture and silage/grain being backgrounded on farm, then about 3 months being intensively fed in a feedlot at up to 80% ration before slaughter.

So, by far, the largest proportion of feeding of most cattle is by grazing or stored forage as part of the backgrounding process. It’s only when they enter the feedlot that it becomes a grain-intense operation, and that part of the production is very short because feedlots don’t make money feeding cows from calf-age to slaughter.

Also, many larger cow-calfs will also hold on to steers and push them, selling them as “fats”, which sees much less intense feedlot experience. This isn’t a huge proportion of the final months of most steers, but is still an appreciable proportion of the market.

The stockyards of Kansas aren’t the typical beef production scenario. They’re just very visible.

Radio interference from wireless charging makes Espresence shit?

Edit: OK, I’ve parsed that title again and understand what was meant.

1M barrels of gasoline is about 90 minutes of national usage. Its not even a blip on the radar of gas prices. It will affect prices by approximately nothing.

If you’re running btrfs, you can send live snapshots to another btrfs volume on another drive, or use Timeshift which will do it for you amd keep track of expiring old copies. Clonezilla is OK for when you are able to take the system down entirely.

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Do a block copy, takes longer but it should handle pretty Mich any filesystem. Downside is I don’t think you resize on the target.

You could also put the new drive in, target Time shift to it and let it buck. Then pull your old drive out and let it boor to the new one, see how that goes.
