I use an iPad, am subscribed to Apple Music and also use a Hackintosh setup (aiming to replace it with a MacBook of some kind in the future).

  • The tablet market is pretty much “ignore everything else and just buy an iPad”. There is no tablet really worth your time on Android, most of it is due to Google and the Android ecosystem practically abandoning the tablet form factor. Meanwhile Apple still supports the iPad to this day and there are plenty of great apps that support the iPad form factor, such as Mona for Mastodon
  • I used to use Spotify for streaming, but found that it was getting increasingly annoying to use. So many long-standing bugs including one where if I download even one song on my phone that’s in my Liked Songs list, the entire app takes like 30 seconds trying to load it. Apple Music handles large lists so much better. The library management is also so much better than on Spotify too, with it basically just being “iTunes but as a streaming service” and I can have smart playlists for whatever purpose I want. Their consistency with regards to UX across the different target platforms aren’t great (iOS and Android can’t create or update smart playlists, Windows and Mac don’t have word-for-word lyrics) but even with all that, it’s the least annoying streaming service for me right now. (and yes, I maintain a local music library with MusicBee - streaming is helpful for discovery)
  • I’ve been recently using my Hackintosh more and it was really comfy using it. I have issues focusing on a single task (which might be ADHD, might not be, idk) and the full-screen mode allows me to focus on the tasks on my screen.

As for your point on bloatware, this happens on Android too. I can’t remove Facebook, OneDrive or YouTube from my phone, only “hide” it. (Samsung btw)

I got sick and tired of the AUR for the simple packages so I started using it for most things I would use the AUR for, and I’m very happy with it. I think some packages have issues with default permissions - I was wondering why 86Box would forget my hard drive images but then I realised the permissions on my home folder weren’t set properly - but that can be sorted anyway.

EmuDeck is already implementing replacements on Switch and is looking at other 3DS emulators. They won’t uninstall Yuzu from your Deck, but likely won’t default to using them if they’re installed. You might have to take a few extra steps with ES-DE or SRM.

DMCA aside (I doubt Nintendo wants to play the game of DMCA whack-a-mole) I think we should let the dust settle before moving along with other emulators. People are (rightfully) angry, but we can’t let that anger cloud our judgement.

This could very will be the successor to Citra, but there exists two other 3DS emulators and one other Switch emulator, so it’s not like those (emulated) consoles are going away soon. As long as they’re not gloating about running leaked games early, I guess they should be fine. I’m hearing that Yuzu went too close to the sun there.

I like the 2000s vibes here. Would’ve been my top one had Switzerland not done DnB.

Dizzy is growing on me quite a bit now, to the point where it might actually break into my top 10. It might not win, but the UK should focus on consistently getting to the left side of the scoreboard before thinking about victory.

I think Belgium might win it this year. It feels very much a song that will not just impress a pop-biased jury but is also upbeat enough despite being a ballad, that it’ll get a decent televote score unhindered by whoever the audience roots for.

That is, unless an audience strongly associates with another act (as what happened with Maneskin and Kaarija), but IDK if that’ll happen this year.

I feel the Arch devs and TUs can be quite helpful, but the users spreading the gospel can be the opposite sometimes. I remember a user saying Arch won’t implement PackageKit because it was shit, but the actual reason from a developer was that PackageKit doesn’t really work with rolling release distributions like Arch.

Take my upvote. There’s nothing about Mastodon that Bluesky doesn’t do for the average user and for me it’s got an actual laid-back vibe where Mastodon feels like people trying to indoctrinate me into a nerd cult.

Sidenote, it’d be nice if Pleroma or one of its forks had the stronghold on the fediverse instead. It’s got a lot more features than Mastodon and Bluesky.

I think the main issue with Content Nation, personally, was that it looked like an SEO spam site that was using the fediverse as its source for content scraping.

That being said, that still doesn’t justify the toxicity from the paranoid nerds that targeted this guy. I was quite surprised when the Bridgy Fed stuff happened, but now, I’m not surprised in the slightest.

I feel like it rushes itself a bit, which is why it hasn’t cracked mine either, though it’s high-up on my list anyway and is definitely one of the stronger entries the BBC has sent out in recent times. The production is really good (as it should be when you’ve got Danny L Harle at the wheel), though I felt like if it could’ve been longer some of the ideas of the song could be fleshed out better.

I’d imagine it’ll work through something like Steam Link like the Quest line of headsets do. Which is still nice, but that means for me trying to invest in networking gear that may or may not work. 😩

(and I’ve tried powerline, I’ve gone through three of those things, they all have a habit of disconnecting unless I ping my router. Someone on Twitter suggested that I rewire my entire house as if I can afford to do that. 😐)

It might be “just USB-C” but it also does things outside of the standard. It asks for a set amount of power not part of the USB-C standard, actually it might have implemented VirtualLink which is considered a dead standard. Not to mention that NVIDIA GPUs also stopped having a USB-C port.

iVRy, who has hacked the PSVR1 to support PC, is in the process of hacking the PSVR2 and even they state that Sony’s solution might be just streaming to the headset because of the issues with implementing direct USB-C support. There might be wired streaming (similar to Oculus), though it’s still early days.

I get the hype (I have the headset myself) but I’m definitely going to temper my expectations until Sony releases more info on it.

There’s a theory going round that the PS5 is going to be that “breakout box” for a PC-based PSVR2 setup. I’m not sure if Sony wants to spend that much on getting people out of their ecosystem when it’d be better to have their own solution, or as Oculus had done, let Valve port Steam Link to their platform. This might be the most likely situation, as it gives access to SteamVR in a way that doesn’t require as much R&D from Sony.

That being said, I would love to have a native PCVR setup (even if it means piping a video through a wire as Oculus does to maintain compatibility with even NVIDIA) and if Sony goes that way somehow, I’ll be happy.

I just posted the Olly one here and someone already downvoted it. 🤨

I used to own an Apple Music community on Lemmy, and it got downvoted for things that were on topic. It honestly makes me real skeptical of Lemmy as a discussion platform, even moreso than Reddit tbh.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yeah, on Reddit there was seemingly an unspoken rule of downvoting only if it’s off-topic or doesn’t add to discussion. Not always, but given that’s how a lot of subreddits worked and also the size of Reddit, that rule was better enforced while here that unspoken rule doesn’t really exist.

As for why I dropped the AM community: Mainly because I was being more inactive on Lemmy so it wasn’t worth me moderating it. There’s also a stronghold from the FOSS/Linux community which is probably why I was getting downvotes for being on-topic on a community about Apple Music. I tried to keep it active but it just wasn’t worth it if my efforts were responded to with downvotes. I also had to leave fediverse communities on Lemmy since they were getting really toxic whenever Bluesky, a platform I use alongside fedi, is posted there.

Probably a lot more hardware using HDMI than DisplayPort? Just throwing a guess, tbh.

That being said, I might consider looking towards DisplayPort when I can get a new monitor…

Liquid drum ‘n’ bass. My immediate favourite.

Are there any Windows-exclusive programs you use?

I had to test/fix something at work and I set up a Windows VM because it was a bug specific to Windows users. Once I was done, I thought, “Maybe I should keep this VM for something.” but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a game (which probably wouldn’t work well in a VM anyway) or some super specific enterprise...

MusicBee and Apple Music.

Apple is Apple so they impose dumb restrictions on the web client like any other streaming platform (and Cider is just a fancy frontend for this), so I have a Windows VM so I get the full experience.

And for MusicBee? Well, the Linux music player situation is… bad, to say the least. There is basically nothing like MusicBee in the Linux ecosystem right now. And every time I went to Reddit to see what people are going to, it’s people who are not 100% satisfied with the alternative or Linux users gaslighting them into thinking MusicBee sucks and Their Choice is the Better One. I’ve tried other players and none of them scratch the itch for MusicBee for me. Quod Libet comes close with its queries, and Tauon looks gorgeous, but I had performance issues with QL for what I wanted it for, and I had issues with Tauon’s playlist filtering. And as for WINE? Performance is slow, CJK characters don’t show up, and tab dragging results in errors due to WINE not having implemented the functions for it to work. I’m happy to keep a Windows VM for MusicBee.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

How’s performance on MusicBee for you? Mine is slow for the components (AMD 7900XT/Ryzen 7950X), but I suspect it might be because of the high resolution album artwork (1200x1200).

Whats your thoughts on Ai in your terminal? (www.warp.dev)

Today i was doing the daily ritual of looking at distrowatch. Todays reveiw section was about a termal called warp, it has built in AI for recomendations and correction for commands (like zhs and nushell). You can also as a chatbot for help. Bluesky’s development has been pretty democratic, moreso than Mastodon where one guy basically leads the entire trajectory of the fediverse (at least from a mainstream perspective) from what I heard.

As for Jack, hasn’t been on Bluesky for a while now - he prefers Nostr. Even though he’s on the board, he’s not attended any meetings nor has he dictated how the platform should go. He just threw money at it and ran after the community didn’t take him seriously.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Jay Graber is the CEO, dunno about the investors but I don’t care tbh. If Bluesky does go to shit, the protocol lets me move away without losing my data.
