Whenever they treat populism as a dirty word, I recall the definition of the p-word I found a few years ago in the Cambridge Dictionary: ‘Populism – political ideas and activities that are intended to get the support of ordinary people by giving them what they want.’ Giving the people what they want! That idea may fill the EU elites with horror. But we should surely embrace populism as another word for democracy.

And when they try to dismiss populist protests as ‘far right’, we should go on the offensive and turn the arguments around by identifying with the causes they have sought to smear. So, is it now ‘far right’ to hate the genocidal Islamists of Hamas and protest against anti-Semitism in Europe? Is it now ‘far right’ to support Europe’s farmers fighting to defend their livelihoods and feed the continent? Is it now ‘far right’ to insist on the biological fact that there are only two sexes and that men cannot demand to be treated as women? Or is it now ‘far right’ for parents and others to protest about children being exposed to pornographic drag shows?

Flick,
@Flick@spinster.xyz avatar

They try to play down the significance of the populist revolt, claiming for example that the protesting farmers are peasant dupes who are being exploited by the ‘far right’. One alleged expert has even suggested that farmers should fly LGBT rainbow flags from their tractors, presumably to ward off far-right bloodsuckers, just as garlic was supposed to keep vampires at bay.

    Tony Blair Institute in “talking sense” shocker?

    https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/tony-blair-paper-warns-against-net-zero-dogma/

    The Tony Blair Foundation report goes on to warn that an over-rapid effort to reduce emissions from Britain’s power sector will thwart the growth of industries which Britain needs to prosper, such as energy-hungry AI. The foundation says that its work with a think tank Carbon-Free Europe has concluded that most estimates of future power demand woefully underestimate future demand for power. It also challenges the argument, made by Miliband and others, that switching to renewables will promote energy security. ‘Replacing foreign sources of oil and gas with foreign sources of clean technologies displaces one security risk with another’, it asserts. Renewable energy, as well as the car industry, is becoming heavily reliant on Chinese-made batteries.

    Still haven’t drunk a booze in 2 months and only once in the last 3.

    Sounds like I’ve quit booze. Always thought it was a lousy drug, especially considering its legality. You’re allowed 2 drugs, booze and fags (said as in the uk slang for cigarettes).

    What if we had been allowed weed and mushrooms instead? Who knows how society would’ve turned out. What if Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers had a mushroom before a dance. James Dean having a bong as he jumped in his car and drove into the sunset?

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/columnists/2024/04/15/salman-rushdie-fatwa-iran-free-speech-tolerance/

    In poll after poll, young people are much more concerned about hate speech and giving offence than older liberals. Maybe that is not surprising as they have grown up in the untrammelled world of online cacophony. Maybe their desire for safe spaces is understandable. Yet their pronouncements that no speech should be consequence-free soon becomes stifling. Can there be no challenge to ideas? How can lobby groups like Stonewall issue soft fatwas like “no debate”?

    As Rushdie himself said, calls for censorship are now coming from progressive voices “saying that certain kinds of speech should be not permitted because it offends against this or that vulnerable group.” We are on a slippery slope. “Offence has become an aspect of identity politics”.

    @mxtthxw Someone on here was saying to me the other day that a lot of them use those kinds of posts as a way of filtering out people: if you block them over it then you’re obviously a woke snowflake with whom they aren’t interested in talking. IDK how universal that is, but she mods an “edgy” instance so presumably has some knowledge.

    Personally I have quite high “scroll on by” thresholds. I do occasionally unfollow someone if it gets boringly frequent.

    The email your manager received and forwarded to you was something completely innocent, such as a potential customer asking a few questions. All that email was supposed to achieve was being forwarded to you. However, the moment the email appeared in your inbox, it changed. The innocent pretext disappeared and the real phishing email became visible. A phishing email you had to trust because you knew the sender and they even confirmed that they had forwarded it to you.

    This attack is possible because most email clients allow CSS to be used to style HTML emails. When an email is forwarded, the position of the original email in the DOM usually changes, allowing for CSS rules to be selectively applied only when an email has been forwarded.

    An attacker can use this to include elements in the email that appear or disappear depending on the context in which the email is viewed.

    There's a new pain drug for cats - they get one shot per month for at least two months. Izzy "Starr" Izzborne, Purrst of His Name (California, USA), is getting them because he has arthritis, and he seems to be improving quite a bit - running around chasing his brother as fast as he can, and even "combing" his fur.

    Norwegian phrase that is very difficult to translate to English:

    ikke gjør deg til
    ikke skap deg

    don't do yourself toward
    don't shape/create yourself

    Maybe the English would say "don't be so silly/dramatic", or "don't mock so much".

    Like when Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes makes a funny face because his parents asked for something he thought was unreasonable.

    That would be what that means. I don't know of an English translation for it.

    Flick,
    @Flick@spinster.xyz avatar

    @thor The nearest I can come in English would be something like “get over yourself”. I think the Scots “dinna fash yersel” might be closer?

    Flick,
    @Flick@spinster.xyz avatar

    @thor Not really surprising, they (and the far north of England) tend to have more Viking (et al) words than standard English.

    Flick,
    @Flick@spinster.xyz avatar

    @thor I suspect there are some Scots who would firmly disagree!

    Flick,

    @thor Speaking of: we (northern England) have the word “ginnel” (pronounced “ginnil” or “gennel” in parts) to mean a narrow alleyway between two buildings. Do you have a similar cognate?
