GoodEye8,

I think it’s hard to estimate how much effort corporations put into getting us to do what they want. If you’ve ever looked at why the public transportation in the US is shit you’d know there’s something suspicious going on with it.

US used to have cities that are great for public transportation, the grid design of the 1920s is excellent or public transportation. Some cities like NY still have that but cities like Detroit spent decades destroying that to build a highway going straight through the city. Suburbs in America are being built in a way that only suits car travel. And not just that, people have been conditioned to think that only poor people would use public transportation. Not only have been people made to believe they don’t want public transportation, they couldn’t have it even if they wanted to because it would be horribly inefficient.

Who benefits from those decisions? Definitely not the people who are now dependent on owning cars. But I’m pretty sure car manufacturers and oil companies are pretty happy because they get to sell more cars and oil. Now I can’t point the finger at that those companies because there’s no evidence they influenced this, at least none that I know of. But it’s awfully convenient for them that when the car boom happened in the 50s the US government was happy to spend money literally rebuilding cities to make them more car dependent and keep at it, while the same thing was stopped in Europe pretty quickly.

I don’t mind giving off some conspiracy theorist vibe, but I don’t think it’s far fetched that corporations are entities that put money above everything else and if needless polluting let’s them make more money they will do it without hesitation. I wouldn’t put it past them to deliberately build the narrative that somehow the people are to blame for this polluting. After all EXXON started the “is it even real?” and “is it even man made?” arguments that regular people used for decades to derail the climate change discussions, all with the purpose of shifting attention away from them. It’s literally their MO.

It's so much easier to comment on Lemmy because it isn't a toxic cesspool waiting to tear you apart

It feels like people are a lot nicer here than on Twitter and Reddit, and even when people disagree, it’s generally civil and not an all-out flame war. Also, there’s no algorithm promoting outrage all the time....

GoodEye8,

It also comes down to what instance you happen to visit. Lemmygrad for example is a legit tankie cesspit. There’s currently a popular post about Greta Thunberg and it pretty quickly devolves into calling her a traitor, because she met with Zelensky: lemmygrad.ml/post/902175?scrollToComments=true . Among other things you will find plenty of justification for the Russian invasion and their war crimes. And the admins openly support trolling outsiders. I’m on the left and I don’t have an issue with Marxism or the concept of communism, but fuck that instance.

Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Hi, I am a guy in early thirties with a wife and two kids and whenever I go on youtube it always suggests conservative things like guys dunking on women, ben shapiro reacting to some bullshit, joe rogan, all the works. I almost never allow it to go to that type of video and when I do it is either by accident or by curiosity. My...

GoodEye8,

I think the algorithm is so distorted by right-wing engagement that it will end up recommend right-wing content, even if you actively try to avoid it. I watch youtube shorts and I always skip if it’s Shapiro, Peterson, Tate or Pierce Morgan. I also skip the moment I feel like the shorts might be right-wing. Scroll enough and eventually the algorithm will go “How about some Shapiro, Peterson, Tate or Morgan?” Give it enough time and it will always try to feed you right-wing content.

GoodEye8,

You do realize that we have roughly 3-4 millenias of technological advancements, before we even invented early capitalist theory? The vast majority of human history contradicts your statement.

GoodEye8,

Sure, I won’t get into that now. But you really didn’t address the main part where a capitalistic company essentially stop innovating once they reach a market dominant position and kills off all the competition? Amazon hasn’t innovated anything since killing off its every competitor. Google kills every innovation they create because it’s not as profitable as they want. Meta has been stealing ideas and buying innovations since its inception. Once the external incentive to innovate dies off capitalism stops innovating.

GoodEye8,

I feel like you’re misrepresenting or misunderstanding what communism is. You might base your opinion on the soviet union but they never actually achieved communism, and some would even say it was state capitalism and not even socialism. In fact it’s unlikely we’ll ever see what an actual communist society would be because it’s very much a vague utopia, and just a goal to strive towards.

Communism by definition actually isn’t very clear because Marx never actually got into the details of how a communist society day to day life would look like. But he did postulate the primary idea of communism: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” One idea of communism is that it’s stateless and classless, meaning there literally couldn’t be a small portion of people getting a large portion of wealth. Marx himself actually said that future communist institutions should be designed to be decided democratically by the people.

GoodEye8,

Capitalism is exceptionally good at short term efficiency, because it’s profits driven and and as long there’s someone else to compete for profits there’s technological advancement. But capitalism is also all consuming and once it’s killed off all its competitors and profits are guaranteed the efficiency of technological advancements stops. Xerox is a great example, they invented a lot of modern things we use today like the foundation of the personal computer, GUI, computer mouse and desktop computing. But they invented those things at the height of their success and because of it did almost nothing with it. They just didn’t need to because they were already making loads of money. Those ideas were instead taken by Microsoft and Apple and they found immense success in it. Had Xerox also killed all the competition then the world we know today wouldn’t exist because there wouldn’t be any need for tech to advance here. The efficiency capitalism gives comes from a purely external source, it’s to beat the competition for profits. Once competition dies out so does the efficiency. Long term capitalism is not more efficient than any other economic system where the efficiency is derived from an internal source, such as the desire to do less work.

And while we’re on the topic of efficiency, the efficiency of capitalism is not necessarily a good thing. Do you know what is efficient? Working from the moment you wake up until the moment you have to sleep. That is what capitalism, at its core, wants. But I doubt it’s something you want. In fact we collectively have decided it’s not what we want because we have laws that exist solely to limit capitalism. The fact that you have time to comment here is inherently anti-capitalist, because capitalism wants that time spent on making a profit.

GoodEye8,

But that’s not because of capitalism, that’s because of technological advances. We have centuries of technological advances in agriculture before we even had proto capitalism. There’s no reason to believe those advances wouldn’t have happened under any other economic system.

GoodEye8,

To make the ex metaphor. Talking shit about your ex is not productive but talking about what was wrong or didn’t work can be very insightful. Entirely blocking your ex out of your mind is a pretty easy way to make the same mistakes again.

I can see why people think it’s annoying but I think this is also a good thing. Talking about this helps people understand what they want to see in their communities or instances.

GoodEye8,

The best part about Noita system is that it's not all about what effect the spell will have but also how that spell will behave. For instance if you have a "rock" spell then the effect is just that, it spawns a rock. But if you add a "homing" modifier to that rock you no longer have just a rock, you have a rock that seeks out and kills pretty much every common enemy you find. The effect stays the same (rock is spawned) but the behavior of the spell changes (now seeks out enemies).

For comparison Morrowind also had a pretty awesome spell creation system, but that system was almost entirely about effects with very little impact on how the effect behaves (self target vs touch vs projectile). The extra dimension of the Noita system IMO really sets it apart from most other magic systems in different games.

GoodEye8,

That has been my favorite part so far.

"We want subs to vote." Subs vote to continue to protest. "No, not like that."

GoodEye8,

Did you try Jerboa? Because it has been one of the most unintuitive apps I've ever used. I'm sticking to desktop view until some other mobile apps are released.

GoodEye8,

Elmo has his own way of doing things. He throws fat stacks at smart people to make great things, and then take credit by saying it was his idea. The reason Twitter is failing is because there’s no smart guy to throw money at, so the only trick in his book doesn’t work anymore.

GoodEye8,

I think Andretti wanted to create an American team? That's what the other teams are blocking, from Andretti with GM becoming the 11th team on the track.

GoodEye8,

Haas is American only by name. The team itself is European. I imagine when people say they want an American team, they want a team that represents America in more than just in name.

GoodEye8,

Also batteries have come so far this past decade it almost seems like a non issue.

I've actually have the opposite experience. I didn't mind integrated batteries a decade ago, because the hardware improved at such a fast pace that it became obsolete before the battery gave up.

But now the hardware improvements are not so fast and a decent phone will be usable for many years, at which point the battery (at least for me) is the first point of failure.

I would much rather take battery replacement over some water and dust protection as ip54 should be enough for daily use (fairphone 4 for instance does have ip54). The only time I've needed more protection is when I needed to take family photos in a pool

GoodEye8,

The Baltic counties were never tight with Russia, they were occupied by the USSR.

GoodEye8,

Discord is by far the worst alternative. Not only is it worse than a reddit style forum, it has the same "eventually needs to make a profit" corporation ontop of it and when it goes to shit all the information there goes with it because unlike reddit Discord can't be archived.

GoodEye8,

I'm not even sure what the content would be without the esports part? 90% of content on globaloffensive is esports related, the rest 9% is primarily CS2 news (which will dry up within a year) and 1% sick plays. Even with a bigger community this site would be in a content drought without esports.

GoodEye8,

For me the armor sets aren’t even that expensive, it’s the upgrades that are stupid expensive. 760 rupees per piece is too much, it’s 2200+ rupees per set which is stupid expensive considering how many sets we have and how little money we get. Not to mention some of the materials are just annoying to get. I got around 12 fire tails from doing most of death mountain region and the start of the gerudo desert area. You need 30 to fully upgrade the cold suit so I thought I might as well grind a bit to get the rest. About an hour later I got more 3 tails. I then proceeded to dupe all the tails I would need in less than 15 minutes. I’ve now killed plenty more but I still wouldn’t have 30 if I wanted to do it legit.

GoodEye8,

Good. Hvidt was on borrowed time and I imagine Hunden went down with him. Hope neither of them find a place in the pro scene.

GoodEye8,

The most interesting part is that supposedly S1mple is the one who reached out to Aleksi. That's some validation to the IGL who most people would consider wildly overrated.

GoodEye8,

Wow, I did not expect that. I know Astralis has been struggling and Glaive really hasn't been good on the fragging department, but to replace him and have Blame be the IGL? Blame already IGLs on Mirage and it's arguably their worst map. I just don't see how that's a good move.

GoodEye8,

But why? What's there to improve? IMO OG Quake 2 holds up (Especially if you use more modern clients Yamagi) and if you want really fancy graphics there's Quake 2 RTX. I really don't see what a remaster would add.
