I’ve been getting these pairing requests on my iPhone and iPad for days now. Which is annoying. Can’t work out how to stop them for good. This “nexo” isn’t mine and is probably a neighbour. Meanwhile, I’m also getting troubling “Device Added to your Account” messages but when I check no new devices are there. And that’s been happening a lot too. This combination is making feel nervous and there’s nothing I can look into for details.

@Gte@mastodon.social avatar

@CWilbur I’ve done that but when I turn it back on it still happens. I’d love a way to blacklist this device but no dice.

@hotdogsladies That’s a damn fun show. One of the quiet greats of its kind.

    @schwa Uh. I can’t believe I never thought of a GraphicsLog function before! I’m stealing that idea.

    @schwa Love it. The z-order is a smart choice too. Also, you could use visual diffing tools to find small discrepancies, etc. Use it to work out overdraw issues. So much potential.

    I think the danger in pulling out of the EU market is that a lot of (I guess) highly skilled EU people would work hard to produce a reasonable replacement. Which might actually become a EU success story if you think about it.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @helge There’s no thought given to how they’d make up the short fall. Which would be China, India, and other markets that are far more iffy than the EU.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @helge Wall Street may feel differently. I’d agree that in the short term it’ll be a speed bump but not huge. As you say, there’s unforeseen risks longer term and who knows what the knock on effects would be.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @kraigschmidt @helge No, of course not. It’d just be a huge pain in the ass and nobody would win.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @Migueldeicaza @helge @kraigschmidt I’m broadly concerned about the growing isolationism in the US and UK and what it means for the post-war era of prosperity. Between calls for tech companies to consider leaving Europe, sabre-rattling about NATO, a concerted effort to stop funding Ukraine fighting authoritarianism, and a growing dissatisfaction with democracy I fear we’re heading for a very dark place.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @Migueldeicaza @helge @kraigschmidt Yeah. It’s more the calls for thinking about leaving that concern me. I’m pretty sure the big players won’t just walk away. Maybe I’m just feeling extra precarious about things these days.

    As the world reals with a sharp authoritarian turn we’ve got right wingers openly courting authoritarianism, fascism, and trying to dismantle and diminish governments. And on the technology side we’ve got the same but with a different spin—vertical integration makes for the best products.

    If all you care about is making the best possible products in a vertical silo I submit to you that you’re more interested in the trains running on time than I think you realize.

    @jkohlmann They are not. Never conflate the two.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @jkohlmann My take is that there’s a myopia at play. The broader conversation is whirling around but, at worst, I think it’s a matter of perspective and NEVER an acceptance.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @jimmylittle @jkohlmann It’s possible to make a watch work well with a phone by working to open the protocols and sharing the insights. I don’t believe iMessage encrypted messages should be made available to non-Apple watches. I think if there’s a link in the chain that isn’t covered by Apple the messages should be coloured green. But they didn’t ask what remedies I’d considered. Went straight for a binary.
    (Muddled first edit. Sorry.)

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @jimmylittle @jkohlmann For sure. I don’t think Apple should compromise user privacy at all. But there are certainly APIs that could be opened or created to help foster an accessory ecosystem beyond Apple Watch. Which, I think, is sort of the point here—there are entire unexplored spaces that are inaccessible due to Apple’s proprietary protocols. Which is fine when you’re small but becomes quite an issue when you’re enournous.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @raytraced @jimmylittle @jkohlmann I’m aware of the technical issues. I work on a piece of software that’s thirty years old. I don’t disagree with your assessment of difficulty, costs, or impediments to velocity. On the other hand they’d have been better of if they’d invested in that path before they were staring down being forced to do it by two of their primary markets.

    Some interesting, but high level, Unreal Engine stuff.
    The Nanite approach in particular is interesting. I believe they’re rasterizing fine detail tris on the CPU.

    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @rms80 @schwa Thank you! Seems like you’d know! 🙂 Am I crazy that it was CPU at one point? I can’t recall where I’d got that from. It is incredibly great tech. You all deserve all the accolades. You’re rasterizing in a compute shader then?

    @Migueldeicaza @schwa I’m going to just keep blaming POSIX for this pickle we’re in. We could live in Jon’s world but our OS model means we’re battening down hatches rather than giving out very fine grain rights. (This is a weird hobby horse for me)

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa @Migueldeicaza I don’t disagree at all. It’s pretty clear 3rd parties can’t do what Apple does. And that’s not limited to system level things. User facing apps just can’t be as capable. How to open those capabilities up to 3rd parties while maintaining security and trust in the OS is foggy at best. One argument is that they don’t matter and it’s a false concern. But I think that sidesteps the issue by simply saying it’s irrelevant.

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa @Migueldeicaza And those damn security dialogs when you try to access a directory are blocking because the POSIX API needs to return an “errno” to the calling process. Making it difficult to open things up in advance, group them in a sensible way, or behave nicely much at all. (This isn’t AppStore specific. Just a point of pain of the way things work)

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @Migueldeicaza @schwa Same! I’m really confident this chat is more light hearted than it may seem. 🙂
