What’s the accepted replacement for QuickTime Player Pro 7 these days?

So I’m ripping these soundtrack CDs, and good lord I cannot help but feel how commodified streaming services have made all kinds of content. It’s not a physical media thing, I don’t think; I just feel like the embarrassment of riches becomes so diminished and trivialized in ways I cannot exactly articulate.

Quick cut from the soundtrack: “Tightrope” is still one of the best battle tracks. Breathtaking, bombastic drama and above average melody, at least to my ears

Just an unbelievable soundtrack, as is ’s soundtrack so far

Finally figured out why “Maze of Scrap Metal” is such a special track: it goes hard on industrial pipe percussion; the logical extension of certain industrial sounds from the original soundtrack

Fuck me, now I want to replay InterMISSION just for the soundtrack alone

Graphically, is a fascinating production graphically.

For a lot of environmental micro detail, such as rocks, grass, and the like, they’ve taken what looks like an asset-driven approach, which holds up at medium distance, but is often pixelated up close. There are also some awkward level of detail transitions. (1/2)

To do any better here, my guess is they’d have to implement systems like Nanite (micro-polygon rendering / mesh shaders), ray tracing, and more sophisticated procedural shading for environments.

Overall materials work, use of motion blur, and, of course, character rendering at the highest level of detail is all astounding, though. I think this is basically as good as it gets with a whole slate of traditional rendering and production techniques. (2/2)

protip: if a game's headphone mix sounds like it's got way too narrow a soundscape, try disabling “3D Audio for Headphones" in the PS5's OS-level settings.

In the past I noticed that sounded really muddy in headphones and have noticed the same with . The latter sounds better with 3D audio turned off, and thankfully the headphone mix is otherwise fine.

Rebirth sounds excellent in my little 2.1 computer speakers setup, though, so like, I know the quality is there! Too bad the 3D audio for headphones mix is kind of off.

@jkohlmann@mastodon.social avatar

Did a little more cross-comparison with in headphones with 3D audio for headphones on and off, using my pair of Sennheiser HD 6XX open ear headphones.

Yeah, audio sources at a short distance away from the player character sound off (muffled) and there's some treble falloff that I don't understand (it makes audio sound compressed or aliased). Even the music mix sounds bad.

3D audio off definitely clears up the headphone mix! Super bizarre.

Sent this in to Square Enix, for whatever it’s worth!

The real tell is that imaging sounds completely wrong for positional audio, so, hopefully they can look in to it. An in the meantime, disabling “3D audio for headphones” greatly improves things.

Got a courteous reply from Square Enix support (was actually a few days ago, but unfortunately it went to my spam mailbox). In part:

“While we cannot guarantee implementation, we would like to assure you that [your report of this issue] will be reviewed by the appropriate party.”

About as well as this initial contact could’ve gone, IMO!

This is so stupid. Not holding my breath, but maybe the EU should go after Nintendo for their dogshit stance on emulators https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/16/nes-emulator-bimmy-for-iphone-in-app-store/

I replayed 's intro yesterday. I am just captivated by the work the team put in to not just present the imagery of the original game at a higher fidelity, but also the characterization and storytelling.
