Large Language Models and mathematics: is there a there there? New blogpost for the Mathematical Outreach Project , , https://sumop.org/2024/04/09/how-will-the-new-ai-impact-mathematics/

As a rule of thumb, you can conclude that when Ted Cruz and FoxNews take up a cause, the issue is NOT how and when algebra should be taught in school. 🙄 It's a weapon in the MAGA Republicans' assault on Women and Woke. (For the record, I support both W's. 🙂)

Much of the Internet "debate" about algebra seems to stem from lack of awareness of what the subject is (versus the arithmetic method it was long ago) https://tinyurl.com/2p9myzt5

P.S. I would presume you are familiar with the concept of "teachable moment". Well, maybe you saw this as a "teachable moment" about the history of algebra, which is fair enough, all good. But the people are ACTUALLY arguing about the rules of Maths, and so it is a teachable moment about the actual rules of Terms and The Distributive Law (which many adults have forgotten about). And I've subsequently had some of them thank me for teaching them the correct rules.

@SmartmanApps Actually, my main point was that the arrival of modern mathematics at the start of the 20th Century changed the entire game, and eliminated the need for all those old calculating rules, with arithmetic becoming essentially a subdomain of algebra, based on axiomatically-defined modern numbers.

"Algebra Rules rules", if you like 🙂

[I was on the MSEB in 2001 when they published "Adding It Up" to accelerate the change.]

Interesting article. But any dog owner will tell you that dogs absolutely recognize the word "biscuit", forcing owners to adopt baroque circumlocutions when they actually want one with their tea.

Frogs recorded with an iPhone at 8:20pm on Mar 5, outside my front door. Not a big deal for many, but this is in Sonoma County!

What? Give a large corporation (or anyone for that matter) my eyeball or my finger for a login? You gotta be kidding me! You want in, you gotta figure out my password! This is classic game theory.

R.I.P. Daniel Kahneman. You had a massive influence on many of us, and we will forever be in your debt. https://behavioralpolicy.princeton.edu/news/DanielKahneman

SMH. I know the MAGA Right have a fear of successful women, but the 11-member California State Board of Education voted UNANIMOUSLY for the new Math Framework (which is VERY similar to the OECD's new framework) so thinking one female professor called the shots is absurd

SMH, gazing at the spectacle of Ted Cruz and the MAGA Right going ballistic about the importance of teaching algebra in schools, a method so greatly shaped by Islamicate traders and scholars that its very name derives from Arabic (al-jabr) 😕

In response to repeated requests, (which I co-founded) now provides schools with access to teacher-specified collections of our math-learning puzzles. The Web-version of the full, adaptive game is still available, as the "Family" option. https://brainquake.com

When your digital life hangs by a thread. This is the cable that feeds the district where I live. It's been like that since a storm back in January took down two power poles and all that they carried, and the repair crew put in a patch cable 🙄
