Day 10 🇩🇪

Finally fitted the new 11-32 cassette & long cage rear derailleur to my bike, hopefully giving me a fighting chance of making it up some of the fiendishly steep hills around our new home 😬✌️

New chain follows tomorrow after degreasing & waxing 🥸

In other news, the FusionDrive of our 2015 family iMac croaked today when upgrading the OS. Have plenty of backups & am trying recovery now, but a whole new machine may be needed 😕

@markmccaughrean We might be buying bicycles this year.... I say might because we have been "We're buying bikes this year..." since 2009 and somehow it never quite happens. Not much in the way of hills here to combat... in the North....

@markmccaughrean @f4grx I'm just weird. It's convenient until the power goes out. I like cashy money, it makes it real. Ethereal everything is a very strange concept to me it becomes just numbers and I am not too good at those.

A return to lovely early summer weather for this evening’s enjoyable 52km ride 🌞🙇‍♂️

Not fast, as I was up at 4am & knackered by now, but sometimes it’s more about soaking up the ambience … 🤷‍♂️

Not least as I’m now in my final few rides before moving from The Netherlands – I’m getting quite emotional about it 😭

The row of wind turbines at the Barrepolder which supply the Heineken brewery outside Leiden with electricity. The setting Sun is behind one of the turbines and the rotating blades are casting a moving shadow over the foreground field, which has some geese in it.

@markmccaughrean I totally understand that, it's the same up here in Schleswig-Holstein, although our part is slightly hilly the horizon goes on forever and the sky is huge. I missed this wide openness when we lived in a Valley in Southern Switzerland where you never got to see the sunset because it was always hidden behind the mountains and foothills. It also has its own beauty but give me the wide open of flat lands or the Atlantic coast any day. You can see into forever, it's glorious.

I’ve lived the last fifteen years in The Netherlands & although I doubtless have a limited & biased view, I’ve been happy with what has seemed broadly to be a progressive, tolerant, & environmentally-conscious society.

I guess this new centre- & far-right government coalition is about to trash all of that with its reactionary populist bullshit 🤮

@markmccaughrean @JonnyT We learn, but it's just that it's not enough of us who do and we don't learn fast enough. We keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and by the time we (as a species) figure it out it will be too late anyway. I'm so full of sorrows and anger these days that every time I see a physiotherapist they find the places I store my emotions in my body and it's like emotional vomit. I just can't any more. Is there hope? Is there anyway forward beyond greed and hate?
