Yeah ! Yippie ! Montréal finally gets its grey alert for wednesday's snow. 10 to 20-cm. At present, the grey alerts cover only Québec. So Hull gets 10-20cm of snow, but Ottawa gets nothing 😉

@jfmezei Got the alert!

If I were head of STM, I would collect station announcements from metro systems around the world and on morning of April 1, substitute each Montreal station announcement with that of a station in another city. Big question is where to put Tsim Sha Tsui? New York’s 42nd announcements with long list of connecting lines would be for Berri.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei I recognised Tsim Sha Tsui because that was the station I took to visit the local museums.

@Milnoc I’d like to wish you a happy Monday Morning™, but I won’t because it is April 1 and you wouldn’t believe me if I did.

@jfmezei I don't believe you, so it must be Monday, but not April 1st!

Pictures from my second new phone, the uleFone Armor 21, next to my first new phone, the Unihertz 8849 Tank Mini 1.

The LED ring around the speaker is the phone's "Infinite Halo" feature that syncs with the music, currently set to Party mode. There are pogo pins at the bottom of the phone to charge it on a docking station (sold separately).

The blue LEDs on the Tank Mini alternate between red and blue, blinking like police lights. The yellow patch is the very bright camplight.

Trivia: IMDB says that John de Lancie only appeared in 8 episodes of Star Trek TNG.

  • All Good Things... (1994) ... Q
  • Tapestry (1993) ... Q
  • True Q (1992) ... Q
  • Qpid (1991) ... Q
  • Deja Q (1990) ... Q
  • Q Who (1989) ... Q (as John deLancie)
  • Hide and Q (1987) ... Q
  • Encounter at Farpoint (1987) ... Q

Amazing how with only 8 episodes, he became such a prominent character part of Star Trek "culture" (with bleed over to other Star Trek series).

Ro laren got 9 episodes.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei Four episodes in Voyager I believe, the last one featuring his son playing Q's son. Then there was one episode in DS9 and one episode in Lower Decks.

Then there was season 2 of Picard. So many episodes to the point he could be considered a season regular!

@Milnoc how goes your new small phone? Is it functionally the same (software, canera etc) as your older phone ? Newer version of android ?

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei Old phone: 5G, Android 11, 720p screen, 8 GB memory, 128 GB storage, 64 MP main camera, NFC, wireless charging, no headphone jack.

New phone: 4G, Android 13, 540p screen, 12 GB memory, 256 GB storage, 100 MP main camera, NFC, no wireless charging, headphone jack.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei The lack of 5G and wireless charging will soon become a huge problem. Manufacturers need to move forward now especially with cheap 5G SOCs readily available.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei in the frivolous features department, the old phone also had a wide-angle camera, a programmable custom button, and an FM radio that worked without headphones.

The new phone has a laser tape measure, two programmable buttons, red and blue flashing LEDs, and a hazardously bright light.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@Milnoc are there any dates set for opening of LRT extensions ? I take it the east opens first ? Have they received extra LRT trains? I assume they have same bogie flaws that require lots of maintenance and slow speeds ?

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei No idea. None of the dates are reliable so we simply wait. And wait. And wait. And pay. And wait.

I'm today years old when I found out it's illegal to fill your car with gas in New Jersey. You have to have an attendant do it.

Folks, I'm unfortunately here today informing you that I'm a criminal. 🚨

@jfmezei @chad However, there are rarely any paper towels left to wipe my dipstick (I check my oil at every fill-up).

Just discovered there were three rugged 4.3 inch phones currently available: my Unihertz 8849 Tank Mini 1, the Doogee Smini, and the Blackview N6000.

They all have the same processor: the MediaTek Helio G99, so similar 4G network, WiFi, and Bluetooth support. If they had used a MediaTek Dimensity processor, they would have supported 5G.

The other specs and features however are a different story.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

The biggest difference is battery capacity. The Smini is 3,000mAh, the N6000 3,880 mAh, and the Tank Mini 5,800 mAh.

Other difference: all three phones are dual-SIM capable, but only the Tank Mini and Smini have SIM-or-microSD capability. The Tank has two programmable buttons against the one button on the other phones along with 12 GB of memory against 8 for the others.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei Nope. Physical SIMs only.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei The microSD card goes into the space reserved for the second SIM. You can't have both at the same time. The limit on my phone is 1 TB. The other phone in my comparative review with microSD support has a limit of 2 TB.

The SIM/microSD tray is sealed against the elements.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei Standard FAT32. You just need to format it first in the phone so it can create its standard Android folders. After that, you can load the card in multiple ways:

  • Put card in card reader and plug into computer,
  • Connect phone to computer and tell phone to share the phone's and the card's storage at the same time,
  • Transfer wirelessly over the network (requires a file manager app on phone and shared drive on computer).

Finally managed to remove the screen protectors from both the front and back of my new phone. I really hate those things. They make the screen look blurry and the glass look heavily smudged.

Milnoc,
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei Looks all good. It connected right away, and I have "HD" and "4G" symbols displayed next to the bars.

Milnoc, to random
@Milnoc@mstdn.ca avatar

I have a dilemma. The old phone always felt too big. Now the new phone feels too small.

I wish there was a rugged version of the Google Nexus 5X. It had a 5 inch 1080p screen, placing the phone's height and width between these two. That 5X fit so well in my hand and the image was pristine.

@jfmezei They're both classified as rugged phones. And, yes, they're stronger than just a case as well as being highly water and dust resistant. uleFone builds an aluminum frame inside their rugged phones to increase rigidity. They also include extra collapsible plastic in the corners to help absorb the shock of being dropped.
