Neo-Nazis walk free from court, spared further jail time over attack on Victorian hikers (www.abc.net.au)

In short: Neo-Nazis Thomas Sewell and Jacob Hersant have avoided further jail time after they were convicted of a 2021 attack on hikers at a Victorian state park. County Court Judge Kellie Blair wished the pair luck and said she believed the prospects of both men being rehabilitated were good. Sewell and Hersant maintained their...

And the part where she didn’t think their behaviour was racially or politically motivated. Like, they’re fucking nazis…it’s all racially and politically motivated.

There’s currently 5 bushfires burning around my state and it’s only mid spring in the southern hemisphere. Last year we experienced devastating floods across the country on a scale we’ve never seen before. A few years before that we had one of the worst bushfire seasons in history.

I am 100% fine with paying more for my food to be delivered if it means these workers get better rights. Solidarity forever.

Ahh modafinil. I used to use this to self medicate my adhd because I procrastinated getting my diagnosis. Worked pretty well actually, far better than just caffeine (although I used to go pretty hard on both). Doesn’t even compare to proper adhd meds though.

It’s looking more like truth and treaty will be the go to culture wars bullshit for this election. No doubt intersecting with youth crime because racism is never too far off from this topic. Really not looking forward to this election tbh.

Right there with you. People might think this is dark but personally I’d rather go on my terms than be cannibalised, or worse, forced to engage in cannibalism. Also the fascists are gonna thrive in a post apocalyptic world and fuck that.

I’m a social science researcher working in a criminology field. If there’s media discourse where politics is intersecting with some kind of sensationalised sense of moral panic then 99.99% of the time it’s not backed by evidence.

What's your chosen diet as someone with ADHD/Autism

I’ve tried a lot of diets, and I have a lot of trouble committing and maintaining structure. I eat out every day. I don’t exercise much. I’m having trouble with willpower fasting. Still I think the most “ADHD friendly” way of dieting is likely fasting. It requires little practical restructuring of ones life, just...

My same foods kind of determine my diet for me.

It is but gender inequality is still endemic across society. Put this way, I’d rather be a woman in Iceland than say Afghanistan, but I’d still rather be a man in every single country.

I live in Brisbane but really want to move to Melbourne. Is it actually as progressive and inclusive as everyone says?

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

Brisbane is kind of weird politically. It’s definitely getting more progressive, but there’s still this solid foundation of Queensland conservativism, which is very socially conservative. Brisbane is also described as being a big country town because so many people (myself included) flock here from the regions. Brisbane feels like a bit of an oasis in the desert, but some people do still bring a lot of conservative culture norms with them when they move here. At the same time a lot of people from northern nsw also move here so they kind of level things out a bit.

As a proud weirdo this is what I’m looking for. Just somewhere that’s a little bit more down with diversity in all its forms.

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

Racism definitely. The voice has really driven this home for me. There’s a reason one nation is popular in QLD. At the moment there’s a lot of media rhetoric about youth crime and shit has turned into racist vigilantes ‘taking justice into their own hands’. It’s also not uncommon to randomly come across people with homophobic and transphobic views that you otherwise wouldn’t have picked as being conservative.

Adhd is actually pretty hard to do this with compared to Autism. Like Newton building hidden networks in his house to avoid interacting with people - yep that’s autistic af. But adhd is a lot more difficult to determine.

In saying that I do think Leo was likely neurodivergent in some way, and adhd does fit. In our own way, a lot of adhders are polymaths because of how we often cycle through interests, slipping in and out of hyperfocus, picking up various skills along the way.

This reminds me a lot of the themes in the final episode of Chernobyl. In so many ways the climate change situation is similar to what happened in Chernobyl. We tend to throw shit at the soviets (often justifiably) but we never like to reflect on the ways in which we are similar. Chernobyl was an opportunity to learn, not copy.

It’s part of their KPIs to suspend payments.

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

These provider arrangements are one of the biggest wastes of taxpayer money. They’re nothing but glorifed parole officers that police the poor. Get rid of mutual obligations and divert the funding for JSPs to raising the rate of jobseeker payments.

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

Look I’d love to see it but this industry doesn’t work like other industries. It’s about punishing and bullying the poor for daring to exercise their human right to welfare. In this case, being a compassionate, conscientious and professional worker will likely result in you not being good at this job.

I used to commute from North Brisbane to Caboolture. Always fortunate enough to be going the opposite direction of the traffic. The Bruce seriously is a carpark. It feels so absurd when you just drive past all of these cars parked on a highway.

Surprise pikachu the country that sells coal to the world wants to suppress information about the ‘side effects’ of its key export product. Seriously though, Australia is only wealthy because of the abundance of resources within our country - that’s why we often refer to ourselves as the lucky country. I live in a state where the majority of the black coal is (the one that you burn for power rather than steel). We get mining royalties from the companies that extract the coal and sell it. When the price of coal went up a few years ago our state government raised mining royalties in line with this. The fossil fuel industry has been attacking our state government ever since. There have been attack ads playing on TV about this for almost 3 years now. These fuckers don’t play around and will fight tooth and nail to maintain their power.

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

I agree. I’m not a huge fan of the idea of there being some sort of cosmic natural order in the universe, but if there is, we have fucked it sideways. And it’s not like we don’t have the capacity and intellect as a species to solve the problem of climate change. We’re just too lazy and greedy to actually do it.

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

In Australia, yes. I also suspect there’s a motivation to not document any evidence that might hold us (or more, our government) responsible for the role that we’ve played in climate change. Not just the fact that we sell coal and gas to everyone and our per capita emissions are fucking whacked, but also the role we’ve played in holding up climate action.

Nonameuser678,
@Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

Yep I’m right there with you. I find the push back against the neurodiversity movement in some of these autism communities really problematic as well. It’s often based on a significant misinterpretation of what the ND movement is.
