Can’t speak for them, but for myself the prospect of having both parents out of the house working while some sort of state sponsored babysitter raises our children is an incredibly shitty way to have a “family.”
It’s just exhausting that people feel the need to turn every form of media into a fight over cultural values instead of just letting people enjoy things. It’s like they can’t enjoy anything themselves unless they know that, somewhere out there, someone they don’t like is upset about it.
Blocking doesn’t work when it just keeps sprouting new heads like a hydra. The whole damn problem that people have with the modern version of feminism is that it essentially demands that their personal problems have to be everyone’s problems everywhere, and the very existence of media which doesn’t cater to feminist ideals is a problem which must be solved. The primary argument for patriarchy, ever since the days of Babylon when Marduk subjugated Tiamat, was that women left to their own devices cause nothing but chaos and conflict. If feminists actually want to achieve equality then they will somehow have to learn to coexist with things they don’t personally appreciate. If anybody wants to learn to live in this world they will have to learn to live on their own for themselves, instead of looking at everything through the lens of how other people think about it. I’ve seen basically nothing of anyone simply enjoying the Barbie movie, but plenty of circle jerking about how other people don’t like it.
It may not line up with the theory of feminism, but it is how things have been working out in practice. That’s the whole problem, if your theory is flawed then it won’t produce the results you desire. The theory of feminism is built upon the very same patriarchy/matriarchy power struggle that Babylon was, and so it fails to account for the existence of people who don’t recognize that power dynamic. And bluntly, that power dynamic is famous for destroying nations, regardless of who “wins” it.
The problem is that the sexually charged furries have trouble understanding and respecting other’s boundaries. This is an even larger problem when you’re dealing with a community that tends to appeal to younger people. It doesn’t help that there have been several very public cases of well known furries being engaged in things so horrible I’m not even comfortable mentioning it here (hint: age and/or species and/or aliveness).
The biggest hurdle is that we don’t actually know what intelligence really is at all yet, computationally. Most of the history of science has been repeatedly learning “but things were actually more complicated than originally expected,” so making claims that we’re soon to be able to replicate something that we don’t actually properly understand yet may be a bit premature. The desire to replicate human intelligence by a machine has been around since at least the 1200’s brazen heads, and yet for everything we’ve discovered since we’re still just beating our heads against a wall trying to sleuth out what it really is that makes us ‘think.’
If it can be done, people will do it. If you think the FBI are unique in this, you’re very naive. We need to fundamentally rethink how our technology is designed if we ever hope to have any privacy again.
The problem is what people are trying to do with the Internet. It was never going to be capable of replacing every facet of society the way these corporations seem to have envisioned things. To paraphrase Serial Experiments Lain: The wired should support the real world, not replace it.
Or maybe people will eventually be fed up and we’ll start our own internet completely out of corporate control.
Or just return to the land, because it’s still right there. Would also help to do for climate change what corporations seem unwilling to do themselves.
We will upgrade lemmy.world to 0.18.3 today at 20:00 UTC+2 (Check what this isn in your timezone). Expect the site to be down for a few minutes. ““Edit”” I was warned it could be more than a few minutes. The database update might even take 30 minutes or longer....
Not sure if it’s related to the upgrade, but I’m finding the context button doesn’t work for a lot of posts now. Instead it just links to that post specifically, and clicking “show context” also only links back to the same post.
My biggest problem is that it actually makes things easier for bad actors when you set them in stone, because there’s more things that they know they can count on to happen a certain way.
Weird. The complaints I’ve seen myself are about how they change the colour pallet for the weather maps compared to several years ago, so the same temperatures that used to be displayed in greens are now being displayed in reds.
Unfortunately you can’t even trust your hardware itself. Modern chips have enormous numbers of undocumented processes, and iirc some newer ones are even getting dedicated sections that aren’t directly accessible to the user (someone correct me, or elaborate if you know more).
A society in which it’s everyone for themselves, that refuses to care for one another, is no society at all. Then everyone acts shocked and horrified at someone who understandably snaps, like modern western culture doesn’t run entirely on schadenfreude....
Num10ck said it maybe better than I can, but it’s because people find in the world things of a similar nature to what they express to the world, so even if you suffer difficult circumstances, as long as you maintain a positive outlook you will still be able to find good things to appreciate in the world.

After migrating from Reddit, it’s jarring that comment sections aren’t cluttered with hashtag-style comments that are just links to subreddits like /HoLuP/
I love that comment sections here are like, y’know, discussions and stuff. Not just the same jokes and parroted phrases over and over and over.
